More than 6,500 counterfeits seized last year in Luxembourg

Pierre Gramegna, Minister of Finance, and Paulette Lenert, Minister of Consumer Protection, visiting the customs offices in Bettembourg on Thursday.

Customs made 201 counterfeit and intellectual property rights captures in 2020, for a total quantity of 6,557 counterfeit items. Air transport remains the most widely used means of transport with 6,112 items intercepted, followed by postal traffic (445 items). As in previous years, almost all of these goods came from Asia.

These are mainly luxury and valuable items, as well as cigarettes, toys and clothing. More seriously, the counterfeits of industrial or pharmaceutical products are always more emitted. In 85% of customs seizures, the authorities said, the goods were destroyed.

Paulette Lenert insists on the need to “make people aware of the fact that by buying counterfeit products, they destroy jobs. Worse still, when it comes to drugs or technical devices, they endanger themselves and others ”. The Minister intends to strengthen cooperation between customs and its services in order to “strengthen responsible purchasing behavior”.
