Lugano loanee Sasere reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment despite Malta’s interest
Even after interest from the European nation, the striker stated his ultimate desire to represent the Super Eagles at the senior level.
Hamrun Spartans star striker Franklin Sasere is determined to represent Nigeria at senior level despite overtures from the Maltese senior national team.
The 23-year-old enjoyed a good campaign at Victor Tedesco Stadium which led him to be linked with the Malta Knights of Devis Mangia internationally.
A potential call-up for the Super Eagles has been discussed, although Gernot Rohr’s squad is well stocked in that department thanks to Paul Onuachu and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Even on this, the former Sunshine Stars ’goal machine claims he still aspires to play for his home country.
“My childhood dream is to wear the green and white of Nigeria and that hasn’t changed,” Sasere said. Purpose.
“I want to use this medium to declare that I have not pledged my international loyalty to Malta or any other country. I will continue to work hard until called by the selectors of the Super Eagles national team.
“Right now, I’m looking forward to improving and scoring goals. By improving, coach [Gernot] Rohr gives me that chance I’ve been waiting for.
“Nigeria is blessed with talented players especially in the goals department and without sounding proud, I am one of them.”
Sasere was frozen by the top-level Swiss team Lugano – and this led to his loan to Spartans – with the aim of gaining regular playing opportunities.
There he scored 15 goals as Mark Buttigieg’s men won the tiara of the Maltese elite division 2020-21 for the first time since the 1990-91 campaign.
He was the last goal outside as Hamrun Spartans got a 2-1 win over Floriana. As it is, they are currently in seventh place, but the big forward believes that defending the title is not out of place.
“The season only has five games and it won’t be fair for us if people start to think we can’t defend our title,” he continued.
“There are new additions to the squad and once we make a gel completely, the world will see the real Spartans.”
Buttigieg’s side will be watching their third win of the league when they host Gzira United on 16 October.
