Krampus runs: is this season canceled in Salzburg?
The mood within Salzburg’s Krampus Pass is depressed. After a forced break last year, many hoped to be able to really start again in the current season. But the first cancellations came in the summer: Austria’s largest mask exhibition on the Pernerinsel in Hallein (Tennengau) was canceled, and the Krampus runs in Gnigl and Maxglan were canceled a short time later (we reported).
Difficult situation in the city of Salzburg
The reason for this are talks about the Corona measures: “The organization of the Gnigler Krampus run is a huge challenge even in non-Corona times,” says Hannes Brugger, chairman of the Alt Gnigler Krampus and Perchtenpass, with SALZBURG24. The 3-G control is not possible due to the many side streets and trips that are too simple.
Gnigler Krampus run canceled again
As in the previous year, the popular Gnigler Krampus run can take place in the state capital due to the corona pandemic. The traditional association confirmed this today in a …
“Don’t want to risk that”
Adolf Sedetka, chairman of the Maxglaner Teufeln and organizer of the Maxglaner Krampus run, which attracted up to 17,000 visitors a year before Corona, is also of the same opinion. Sedetka is above all the question of responsibility for a hot potato. “We decided the rejection in the board of directors. We just don’t want to risk it.” Instead of the big runs, the Krampuspassen want to make home visits again this year.
Compare with other events
Brugger does not allow angry comparisons with the Salzburg Festival or the Electric Love Festival, which are often made the rounds on social media: “These are closed event rooms. Control is much easier here,” said the Salzburg chairman Homeland Associations.
Even smaller runs on the dump
This means that several fixed points are already missing from the Krampus calendar in Salzburg. Even smaller Krampus runs are on the brink. In Mühlbach am Hochkönig (Pongau), Caglar Öztürk, chairman of the Bergteifin, is pessimistic about the season. “There are only events with the 3-G rule, but I would need 15 to 20 other people for that. That would be too much effort,” he explains in an interview with S24. Should the current measures be tightened further, home visits would not take place either.
Mask carvers set cancel
“The business has been dead since August last year,” complains mask carver Andreas Rettenbacher from Puch (Tennengau) in an interview with SALZBURG24 about the current situation. There are no walk-ins and no spontaneous purchases. The failures of the Krampus runs draw wide circles: “Incidentally, the same also gilds for the tanneries that make the skins. Mulled wine stands and butchers also suffer from the rejections.”
Anifer Krampusse plan as usual
The situation is different in Anif (Flachgau). The Anifer Krampusse organize their annual Krampus show in the Friesacher Stadl and a run in town. “We are sticking to our planning and are currently assuming that everything can take place,” said chairman Michael Friesacher to S24. Around 1,000 visitors are expected at the Krapusshow “AKT” over two days. The control of the corona rules is easier here, however, since it is a closed room. “We want to continue and live the customs.”
Confidence in the Lungau
The Lungau is also looking ahead to this season with confidence. “We are waiting, but we are already planning our run,” said Markus Ferner, chairman of the St. Michael Krampus Group. The invitations have already been sent out and there is great interest in the run that is already fully booked. It also points out, however, that the organization is handled a little differently in St. Michael: “The run takes place within the framework of the Advent market, so the economy and the community take control. Otherwise it would not be possible.” The Krampus can also concentrate on their core business.
Krampus runs: Calendar on SALZBURG
Even if the Corona measures make it more difficult to organize Krampus runs, it is apparently not impossible to organize smaller runs. If the regulations are not made even more stringent, let us help you find ways to implement them. Even if this means a little more effort this year.
We at SALZBURG24 are planning a comprehensive list of Krampus runs that can take place in Salzburg for today. Do you have an appointment for us? Then send an email with the venue, time and date to [email protected].
