Florence, a garden dedicated to Fedra Farolfi ‘sister of the emigrants’

Councilor Martini: ‘A woman of the people who is dedicated to supporting Florentines abroad’

“A woman of the people of great human depth who devoted herself to active volunteering in favor of the Florentines who left to find fortune abroad, so much so that she was known as the ‘sister of the emigrants’. An extraordinary character to whom the city owes due recognition. For this reason, like the Administration, we wanted to remember it by naming this garden after the Isolotto “.

The Councilor for Toponymy and Culture of Memory Alessandro Martini thus recalled Fedra Farolfi whose name will now be linked to the green area in via del Saletto. The ceremony was attended, among others, by the president of Quartiere 4 Mirko Dormentoni, Don Marco Domenico Viola, parish priest of San Lorenzo and family members.

Florentine by adoption, Fedra Farolfi will join young people from Torrita di Siena to work in a family as a maid. Also thanks to a missionary relative, he dedicated himself to volunteering by being close to and helping, even concretely, the Italian emigrants abroad. A support that could have been a letter (and there is a rich correspondence from Fedra Farolfi with many of them) but also packages, concrete help, initiatives in favor of these people who, leaving to find a better situation, often found themselves in difficulty .

“I thank the Insigne Basilica of San Lorenzo who requested to name a place in the city after Fedra Farolfi. Their commitment to solidarity actions ‘in the second row’ but in any case in first place for witness and interpreted values. But in the past we have been a country of emigration and the experience of Fedra Farolfi helps us to better understand what it means to leave your home in search of fortune “concluded Councilor Martini.
