Algarve accounts for almost 30% of tourist overnight stays in Portugal in the summer of 2021
After the crisis faced in 2020, the summer returned to record good numbers in tourism in Portugal. The Algarve has maintained its strong tradition of being the most visited destination in the country, both by national and foreign tourists. Some data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that the region was responsible for 28.6% of overnight stays by tourists in the country: an index that surpasses the numbers registered in 2019 and with a growth projection for the future.
This report is part of a comprehensive study led by INE to assess the tourism situation in Portugal.
In the first seven months of this year, the Irish country had a little more than 5 million tourists, 70% of them of Portuguese origin, which shows that domestic tourism has gained strength this year and was the main responsible for the sector’s recovery. However, compared to 2019, a drop was almost 3% in the number of visitors.
The good news is the strong recovery of the Algarve and most of the region’s districts. With almost 30% of tourists choosing Faro, Portimão and Lagos to sleep in, the impact on the economy was positive. An unemployment rate fell sharply until the month of August. The number registered a drop of 19.9% compared to the same month in 2020, according to data from the Employment and Professional Training Institute (IEFP).

In addition to the drop in the unemployment rate, the Algarve also had a good response in tourism commentary profits. The region was at the top of revenues, with 79.6 million, which represents an increase of 357% compared to 2020. The Azores, the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon and Madeira also achieved a good recovery, but still assimilated below the numbers it acquired had in the same period in 2019.
Faro remains in the spotlight
The Algarve continues to be the main reference for tourism in the country, whether for its accommodation in the region or its location. The website Discover Cars shows that Faro airport has a good rating within the tourist destinations in Europe, due to the fact that it is well located.
