– We do not cooperate with mercenaries. It is completely unacceptable and a clear red line, says Minister of Defense Trine Bramsen (S) to Jyllands-Posten.
The West African country is now negotiating with private Russian mercenaries from the Wagner group to fight Islamist groups in the country. The agreement has not yet been a reality.
The Wagner group has close ties to the Russian Ministry of Defense and Russian intelligence, and the alleged leader of the company is also linked to President Vladimir Putin. Earlier this year, three human rights groups sued the group in Russia for torture in Syria.
Reports of Wagner group existence first appeared at the beginning of the war in Ukraine. It later appeared in Syria, where it supported the regime of President Bashar al-Asad.
Since then, mercenaries affiliated with Wagner have operated in African countries, including Libya and the Central African Republic.
Denmark is among the countries that are part of the Takuba force, which is engaged in capacity building to strengthen the Malian army’s ability to deal with the growing terrorist threat in the area. The initiative for the force comes as a result of extremist Islamist groups are on the rise in Africa and especially in the Sahel belt, where Mali is located.
