A penalty double by young star Karim Adeyemi (35th, 53rd) made the deserved success perfect and also meant coping with the penalty trauma in Seville.

Two weeks earlier, both Adeyemi and Luka Susic had each missed a penalty, only Susic scored in the 1-1 draw against the Spaniards. At that time, the first success against a team from the top five leagues (Germany, England, Spain, Italy, France) was just missed, on Wednesday it was after the victories over Genk (2019/20) and Lok Moscow ( 2020/21) really ready. Even if a goal from Burak Yilmaz (62nd) with the active help of Salzburg goalie Philipp Köhn was exciting again. In three weeks, on October 20, the duel with VfL Wolfsburg, who played 1-1 at home against Sevilla on Wednesday, is waiting again at home.

Because defense chief Maximilian Wöber got fit again in time, Jaissle did not have to fall back on the pairing Bernardo / Jerome Onguene in the defensive center, which was reduced in terms of personnel. Wöber also acted alongside Onguene, who represented the long-injured Oumar Solet. It was one of two changes compared to the 1-1 draw against Sevilla. The second: In the storm this time Noah Okafor acted instead of Benjamin Seskos together with Adeyemi.

In front of 24,207 spectators, there was a brisk duel between two quite disciplined teams that didn’t leave much room. Real chances were scarce, once Okafor checked the attention of LOSC goalie Ivo Grbic (12th), who was only challenged a little more with an Adeyemi low shot (26th). Lille recorded only headers from the two central defenders Sven Botman (23rd) and captain Jose Fonte (25th) next to the goal. The Lille offensive to oldie Yilmaz (36) does not make a trick despite a slight increase in possession.

Soon after half an hour it was Adeyemi who once again made the difference with his speed. As a result of a quick counterattack by Aaronson, Sven Botman was only able to separate the lightning-fast German from the round leather with a foul in the penalty area, even if the penalty decision was not easy for referee Halil Meler. Because Botman hit Adeyemi’s thigh just before he played the ball.

After a long consultation of the VAR images, the Turk finally pointed to the “point”, Adeyemi was looking forward to 1-0. Even if Grbic was still there on the penalty shot at the top left: He was spared the deja vu from the Sevilla game when he missed his first penalty this time. As a bonus, the DFB team kicker set a record by Arjen Robben with the four eleven that he pulled out (three times in Seville) in a CL season.

Lille threatened the next disappointment after the 0-0 home draw against Wolfsburg, Salzburg almost decided the game even before the break: In a double chance Rasmus Kristensen failed with a Köpfler to the pole, in pursuit Wöber hit the outside netting (41. ). And in stoppage time, a promising Adeyemi shot was blocked by Fonte on the fiver.

Adeyemi also sunk a second penalty

Salzburg did not want to leave any doubts after the break and rewarded themselves after an early urge phase. This time the penalty was immediately clear, the turning Yilmaz had clearly touched a Wöber free kick with his elbow. On his second attempt, Adeyemi Grbic finally duped with a neat shot in the middle of the goal, the game seemed to be over.

But Köhn made it exciting again. The 23-year-old man himself maneuvered a half-high free kick into the goal, the home side only briefly managed to get their composure. Lille appeared – after a few changes on the offensive, clearly animated – more often at the front, but did not have a single good shot opportunity until the final whistle. Salzburg could not be duped in the finish either and played the victory home with great fighting spirit.
