Restrictions for mammals: Hanspaulka Elementary School in Prague 6 tests the ban on cars entering the school before eight o’clock in the morning
As usual, Na Čihadle Street in Prague 6 is quiet, on weekdays between half past seven and eight in the morning, columns of cars formed in it. Parents planted their children there, who attend Hanspaulka Elementary School. After repeated complaints, the school and the city district decided to resolve this and forbade the street before class began.
The driving force behind the School Street project is Martina Galušková from the Hanspaulka Elementary School Friends Club. “Parents turned to us more and more often, because more and more cars came to the school. This means that in our case, 200 to 300 cars turn here at the school in 15 or 20 minutes, ”describes Galušková.
The friends club has also prepared information materials and a map that shows where you can stop well. New places for short-term parking have been created and the school is also trying to motivate parents to take their children on holiday. According to the director of the Hanspaulka school, Marie Pojerová, the situation at the upper entrance has improved, but it has worsened at the lower entrance. “Parents stop in such places that they both obstruct traffic and endanger their children because they cross the crossroads because there is a railing around,” the school principal finds out.
Other schools will also be involved
Therefore, a police officer stands at the lower entrance in the morning and the school invents other measures to increase security. The municipality and the city district also took part in the Školní ulice project. According to the councilor of Prague 6 for the transport of Jiří Lála (ODS), the school street cannot be introduced everywhere. In some cases, for example, the lack of detours prevents this. Nevertheless, the town hall has already selected some other schools. “In the vicinity of the Bílá Primary School, where a new pavilion is to be built, which should be just across the street, so it would record that,” reveals the councilor for transport.
School Street has also introduced Prague 20 in Horní Počernice. According to the final reports, the number of pupils who came by bike, scooter or on holiday is increasing. The school in Říčany in Central Bohemia also has a positive experience.
