Kerry announces green technology coalition in Geneva
The US climate commissioner John Kerry announced a future coalition of green technology in Geneva on Wednesday. Companies need their part to protect the climate.
the essentials in brief
- The climate conference in Glasgow (COP26) next November will “not be the last, but the best opportunity” to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, said former US Secretary of State Kerry on Wednesday at a World Economic Forum ( WEF) organized debate in Geneva.
“We’re dangerously behind,” said Kerry. Measures need to be accelerated in order to achieve CO2 neutrality by 2050. Above all, greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced by 2030.
Despite the US-China tension, Kerry wants Washington-Beijing cooperation on this issue. Without China, the goals could not be achieved, he said. And the companies would have to “advise part of it”.
The problem is that there is still insufficient demand for climate-friendly technologies, says Kerry. The US is campaigning for a coalition of big companies to invest in this technology and expand the use of these tools, from aviation to the delivery of goods.
The coalition should be announced before COP26, Kerry said. He wants to achieve something similar to that for vaccines against the coronavirus.
