Hampidjan: ‘This machine is pure genius’
‘This machine is pure genius. It went like a dream and it was surprising how fast it was all done, “said Friðleifur Einarsson, captain of Helgi María, the fresh trawler Brim and he was referring to Hampidjan’s new mobile wire tension unit which is used to wind wind on a cigar barrel under constant tension.
He said that before, the only method was to shoot the trawls away in deep enough water and run as much of the warp as possible to tension it.
In recent years, Hampiðjan has built solid foundations in its grid air around the country for traction in Reykjavík, the Westman Islands, Akureyri and Neskaupstaður. There was certainly a demand for this facility to rewind the warp evenly and correctly on the winch drums. The procedure has been to attach the trawler with the stern to the pier, with the new wire directly to the ship from the tensioning motor, which is located on a solid foundation on the pier.
This has been shown to be the most effective method of tightening trawls and has given excellent results to those trawlers who have used it. It is not always convenient to evaporate in places where there is voltage in these places, so a mobile voltage unit has been set up that can be taken to other places. To test the new tensioning equipment, it was reeled on board Helgi María, where it lay with the control panel gate to the pier at Skarfabakki in Reykjavík’s Sundhöfn. The tension car was located on one side of the trawler’s stern trawler.
The new warp that spun on board Helga María is 32 mm in diameter. The weight is deceptive and each spool is no more or less than nine tons, so a crane is needed to lift each wire spool into place on Hampidjan’s wire truck. Helga María took 2103 meters (1100 fathoms) of wire on each drum.
Jón Oddur Davíðsson, CEO of Hampidjan Ísland, is pleased with the new wire trolley.
‘This makes it possible to deliver wires where needed if direct winding is not possible. This gives us the opportunity to make Hampidjan’s service offering to fishing companies and fishing vessels even more accessible, “he said.
Does the excitement do what it is supposed to do?
We talked to Friðleif Einarsson but Helga María was fishing in the mountains southwest of Iceland in heavy weather.
“It works better than I could have hoped. You will find the difference right away. Having the winding tension means you can shoot the gear whenever you want, on deep or shallow grounds. The nests are always excited and ready for the winds. This service is a real bonus, “said Friðleifur Einarsson.
