Portugal already known more than 19.5 million doses. From September 20th to 26th, about 165,000 doses were administered. It is the lowest value since March and is justified by the fact that a percentage of the total population vaccinated is already close to 85%.

Four out of every 5 young people between 12 and 17 years old already have the full vaccine. Mental vaccination is facing. In one week, only 5,912 people started the vaccination process. 13% of this age group has yet to be vaccinated.

At the moment, there are already 3 regions with 85% of the population fully vaccinated. Centre, North and Alentejo taking a lead in the vaccination process early on. On the contrary, Madeira, Azores and Algarve have not even reached that percentage of population with just one dose, so they will most likely only reach the national goal at the end of the year.

Portugal is already one of the most vaccinated countries in the world. It leads both in the population with at least one dose and in the population with a complete vaccine schedule. After an initial phase in which the United States, Israel and the United Kingdom led the vaccination process, the landscape began to change in early summer, with several European Union countries advancing faster in the biggest immunization process in history.

Portugal has almost always been on par with the average of the 27 Member States, but since the beginning of July it has picked up the pace and took off from the reference average. When comparing the number of doses inoculated by European partners, Portugal has a prominent place. With the lowest number of doses per inhabitant are Bulgaria and Romania.

In the European Union, vaccines are expressed simultaneously for all Member States and the distribution of doses is proportional to the number of inhabitants in each country. Still, Member States are vaccinating at different ages. In Portugal the vaccine Pfizer / BioNTech is the most represented and Janssen (J&J) has the least distributed doses.

Portugal acquired more than 32 million doses of various vaccines against a covid-19. The purchase is part of an agreement between the European Union and six pharmaceutical companies. For now, there are four vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency and being administered in Portugal: BioNTech / Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen.
The development of the Curevax, Novavax and Spuntik V vaccines is being monitored by the European Medicines Agency.

The progress of each country’s vaccination plans is dependent on operational and logistical issues.
The country is administering four vaccines: Moderna and Pfizer / BioNTech for all ages (28 and 21 days between the two doses, respectively); Janssen for all men over 18 and for women over 50 (single shot); and AstraZeneca for those over 60 (2 months between the two doses).
