The announces it State Secretariat for Foreign Affairs, adding: “This Day was celebrated for the first time on 29 September 2020 after the Republic of San Marino and Andorra promoted a resolution at the United Nations General Assembly in 2019 in which they proposed to establish a Day for the fight against food waste.

The celebration of this international day represents a call to action to raise awareness of the whole world, citizens and institutions, on the centrality of the issue of food losses and waste and on the most significant challenges to be faced for a sustainable and circular economy for the future. of the Planet.

It is estimated that every year 1.6 billion tons of food produced and destined for human consumption will be wasted every year, representing one third of the food destined for consumption, causing significant economic and environmental damage. The commitment against food waste must be a global priority; addressing loss and waste is critical to increasing efficiency in the way our food is produced, distributed and consumed.

The Day is held in a context where fame and the changes in the pandemic advance, while the food security and nutrition of millions of people. At the same time, food losses and waste are increasing due to people moving and transporting goods dictated by the pandemic.

Among the global initiatives scheduled, there is a virtual celebratory event on 30 September, organized by the respective permanent missions to the United Nations of San Marino and Andorra, UNEP, FAO and ITU, which are collaborating to bring together Member States, UN bodies and non-state actors in a New York-based virtual event that will highlight innovative initiatives to combat food loss and waste, including through the use of information technology and of communication.

The event, entitled Innovating Against Food Loss and Waste – International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day and WSIS, will begin at 15:00 on Thursday 30 September and will see the participation of the Ambassador of the Republic of San Marino in New York, Damiano Beleffi.
