Professor Francesco Pegoraro appointed national member of the Accademia dei Lincei
Pisa, 28 September 2021 – Professor Francesco Pegoraro, a longtime professor of Plasma Physics at the University of Pisa, has been elected National Member of the Accademia dei Lincei. Born in 1947, Pegoraro earned a degree in Physics from the University of Pisa and a diploma from the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa in November 1970 under the guidance of Luigi Arialdo Radicati. He carried out his scientific activity first at the Massachusetts Institute of Techology, USA (1974-1976), then at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa (1977-1990), later as full professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Turin ( 1990-1996) and finally, as full professor of Plasma Physics, at the University of Pisa (1996-2017).
From 1987 to 1989 he was Group Leader of the Theory Division at the “Joint European Torus” (Culham, UK). In 2006 he was appointed honorary professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, (Moscow, Russia). In 2008 he was appointed Corresponding Member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. In 2015 he was awarded the order of the Cherub of the University of Pisa. His research activity concerns the Theoretical Physics of Plasma with particular regard to the study of collective processes in fusion and space and astrophysical plasmas and the interaction of ultra-intense electromagnetic pulses with relativistic plasmas.
Within the Physics Department of Pisa of the University of Pisa, Francesco has played an important role in the formation of a real school of Plasma Physics which is still today a point of reference for universities for Italian research. In addition to his very important contribution, Pegoraro has succeeded in getting researchers from all over the world of the highest level to pass through Pisa, thus stimulating a wide-ranging research, from fusion to space physics to laser-plasma interaction. In this sense, his contribution is not limited to his scientific activity of excellence, but has allowed him to sow interest and passion in a vast community of researchers and students.
