North-east entrance to Avignon-Carrefour de Realpanier: room for bicycles and pedestrians!
“… This project perfectly illustrates a principle that I have always defended: the developments of the future, useful for Vauclusiens and for the territory, only see the light of day and take on their full dimension if the public actors, and particularly local communities, mobilize together and unite their efforts … “
Dominique Santoni, President of the Vaucluse Departmental Council
Extract from his speech during the inauguration of the roundabout cycle of Réalpanier – September 28, 2021
AMENITIES
• Treatment of the roundabout to reduce vehicle speed and create a secure lane (for pedestrians and cyclists), from the D901 to the east (route de Morières-les-Avignon), the D28 to the north (St Saturnin), avenue Pasteur du Pontet, to the road to Morières to the west and avenue de l’Amandier to the south,
• Creation inside the roundabout of platforms with sections limited to 30 km / h (limited before works to 50 km / h in theory, 70 km / h in practice), obtained from specific road markings giving priority to passage of cyclists at intersections, an innovative device for detecting cyclists and pedestrians with dynamic information for motorists, and dynamic speed indicator panels,
• Treatment of the greenway in colored asphalt,
• Redevelopment of the old departmental (abandoned section) allowing passage along the Vaucluse canal,
• Creation of a small car park on the road side of Morières, with treatment of the surface with permeable paving stones and development of a wooded area. Extension of the sidewalk (less than one meter at the narrowest passage) with the installation of a footbridge over the Vaucluse canal).
Réalpanier’s Green Way, a structuring link in several ways:
It connects the east of the city to the neighboring municipalities
It constitutes a section of the route of the temporary Via Rhôna
• Street treatment to reduce vehicle speed and create a secure route for cycles: one-way (East to West) and removal of a lane used to create a two-way cycle path protected from vehicles by a curb. concrete ,
• De-waterproofing of an island on the west side with tree planting.
Avenue de l’Amandier
• Sustainability of the Covid facilities tested in 2020,
• Reduction of the width of the road to reduce the speed of vehicles (limited to 50 km / h but little respected) while remaining compatible with the classification in RGC (Main Traffic Road) and creation of a green west side protected from vehicles by a concrete border,
• De-waterproofing of part of the old road and creation of a green space at the intersection with rue Claude Chabrol. Use of draining concrete for the section of greenway in the North.
These arrangements made it possible to:
1. Remove a black spot from the cycling network at the entrance to the North-East city, depending on several existing cycling infrastructures in Avignon and the neighboring municipalities;
2. To offer secure access to the inhabitants of the Pont des Deux Eaux and the Almond tree to the Réalpanier shopping area;
3. To offer improved cycling accessibility to and from the major educational facilities of the Pont des Deux Eaux (Gérard Philippe college and René Char high school).
