STOCKHOLM, September 28 – About 25 people were taken to hospital after an explosion damaged a residential building in the city of Gothenburg early today, reported public service radio SR.

Police said they had launched an investigation. Sahlgrenska University Hospital’s spokesperson said that three women were seriously injured among the people taken to hospital.

The rescue service said they were working to evacuate people and put out fires in the building.

“Several apartments and stairwells are affected. It is currently unclear what caused the explosion, says the rescue service for the greater Gothenburg area.

A spokesman for the rescue service said several hundred people had been evacuated from the explosion and fire.

The immediate cause of the explosion and the fire was unclear. The Nordic country has struggled with rising gang crime in recent years, with rival groups using explosives and firearms to solve points. – Reuters
