Complicated crossing
Traffic lights, roundabouts: crossing the city of Ariège, which marks the start of the upper Ariège valley, can become a pain in the middle of the summer season or on certain weekends.
It is this knot of corks that will jump in the years to come.
Thursday, September 23, 2021, the prefecture of the Occitanie region has, in fact, announced progress on the Tarascon-sur-Ariège diversion project.
2.2 kilometer bypass
This project is simple: make the outline of Tarascon by creating a 2.2 kilometer two-way route with a circulation in 2027. A tunnel, a little over 1400 meters long, will have to be built for the deviation.
Passing channels are planned and above all, the diversion could be put in 2X2 lanes in the more distant future.
A gain of 20 minutes during peak hours
This deviation should make it possible “to limit congestion on the route, especially during periods of tourist crowds”. The prefecture adds:
It is structuring to strengthen the attractiveness of the Upper Ariège Valley and for its tourist and economic development. Carrying out this diversion will save time for the journey between Tarascon-sur-Ariège and Ax-les-Thermes, estimated at around 20 minutes at peak times.
Twenty minutes, anything but a small gain …
Start of work: 2024?
The cost of the deviation project is estimated at 169.5 million euros “and its financing will have to be sought within the framework of the road section of the next State-Region plan contract to be signed by the State, the Occitanie regional council and the council. department of Ariège for the period 2023-2028 ”, indicates the State.
Subject to the establishment of the necessary financing for its realization, and the obtaining of environmental authorizations, work could begin by 2024.
