The Calais Hospital Center innovates for patient service with its new DxA 5000 Fit automation solution
Doctor Hervé Vermeulen : The Covid increased the activity of CH by 20 to 40% depending on the waves, which disrupted our grassroots organization. The automation of preanalytics with the chain then frees up time in biochemistry, for example to carry out COVID tests requiring the contribution of all technical resources. The DxA 5000 Fit will therefore not only have an impact on the biochemistry sector: it will strengthen our ability to withstand the possible disruptions of a Covid wave, or of another crisis that could arise. The more we automate, the more efficient the organization of our activities will be.
How did you experience installing the solution?
Dr Khalid Tabaouti : This is a large-scale project, the deployment represented 3 months of work, and the schedule was kept, even in times of Covid! There was a very good complementarity between our teams and that of Beckman Coulter, who had put in place a complete installation plan taking into account our specificities. It is above all a question of the will to succeed in a project, and of a team investment. Our technicians had to manage the machines being qualified and at the same time train themselves in their use. The team was enthusiastic about the idea of an automation tool that would improve their daily lives. Today we have positive feedback, especially during on-call periods during which technicians can now exercise their expertise more calmly.
The deployment of the DxA 5000 Fit is a world first, so you’ve never seen it in another lab?
Doctor Hervé Vermeulen: Indeed, we had never seen him anywhere, but we knew our main partner well, and his professionalism. We had therefore con fi dence, and if he offered us a solution of this type, it was because he saw an interest in it for us.
are the prospects for the future evolution of your laboratory?
Dr Khalid Tabaouti : We understand going crescendo. In the future, we may be able to go upmarket and add other modules. In addition, the new performance indicators will allow us to refine both our TATs (Completion time, or delivery times) but also the organization and efficiency of our structure.
Doctor Hervé Vermeulen : Now we are going to relaunch a real management tool, with customization tables, which will allow us to monitor and identify possible areas for improvement in our organization. Automating the biochemistry and immunoassay benchtop is just the first step. We will have the opportunity to go further as contracts are renewed to automate other sectors in the future. Here we have set foot in automation. With this new solution, we have the feeling of being a modern laboratory, with a solution that was previously reserved for larger structures. And there is no doubt that the service to the patient will be improved.
