Storm and damage, “An intense event, but typical of late summer” – Chronicle
Pisa, 27 September 2021 – the coast, above all, but not only that, under the fury of the storm. Crazy weather? Exceptional event? We heard Bernardo Gozzini, director of Lamma, the environmental monitoring and modeling laboratory, founded by the Tuscany Region in 1997. “Between summer and autumn, with the sea still warm, there can be significant storms of considerable intensity – he explains -. trumpets are common along the Tyrrhenian Sea and on the Tuscan coast, where there are at least one or two events a year “.
But what happened this time? While in the province of Massa Carrara a trumpet has blown down, the phenomenon must be investigated on Pisa.
“To state precisely that Pisano was also hit by a sea horn, further elements are needed, perhaps images or the analysis of the damage could be useful – adds Gozzini -. Storm, of such intensity as to have a sort of explosive impact and capable of causing considerable damage “.
The trumpet is born at the sea, has a diameter that runs out from more than one kilometer “and most of its strength over strength, loses strength in the hinterland”. “Even the sea horn – explains Gozzini – is associated with the storm: here ascending and descending currents push the vortex that is created at the base of the cloud. But for Pisa, I repeat, we cannot exclude the important gust of wind inside the storm”. The water also fell in patches and with varying intensity. “In Pisano we are at about 15 millimeters – concludes Gozzini -, therefore normal. Between Massa and Lucca, in twelve hours, ten stations recorded over 100 millimeters of rain, a lot: just think that on average throughout the month of September we have 70 So in that area more water fell in a few hours than in a whole month “. Wet and violent, therefore, farewell to summer. fortunately no injuries.
