RB Salzburg sign Finnish goalkeeper Atte Tolvanen – winter sports – ice hockey
Vienna – Monday, September 27, 2021, 1:55 p.m.
EC Red Bull Salzburg has signed a new goalkeeper, Atte Tolvanen. The 26-year-old Finn played for the Finnish top club Ässät last season and switched to Vaasan Sport in the summer, from where he is now making the move to Salzburg.
“I’m happy to be here. I don’t know anyone from my new team yet, but the guys gave me a very warm welcome,” said Tolvanen after the first off-ice training session on Monday. In Europe, the Red Bulls are the goalkeeper’s first stop outside Finland: “I was looking for an opportunity like this. I hope I have a successful time here. I want to help the team win the championship.”
Tolvanen is expecting an intense game in the bet-at-home ICE Hockey League: “I can hardly compare it to the Finnish league. But I’ve heard that the game is more open here, more scoring chances are created and I am prepared for more breakaways got to.”
Atte Tolvanen learned his trade at various clubs in Finland and went to America in 2013 at the age of 19. There he played for two years in the NAHL (North American Hockey League, Junior Ice Hockey League) and then for four years in the NCAA at Northern Michigan University. He then played 6 games for Syracuse Crunch in the American AHL and returned to Finland in 2019, where he played for the Pelicans in 2019/20 and at Ässät in 2020/21.
Tolvanen has played 137 games in the NCAA and 45 appearances in the top Finnish league. His personal highlights include the U20 SM-Liiga Rookie of the Year Award as well as the NCAA (WCHA) Goaltending Champion twice in his last two years of college.
