Hannover-Vahrenheide will bring the “Hanova” housing industry on board for insect protection
Flowering meadows, nesting mounds and herb lawns should provide more habitat for insects in the urban area. Slowly there is movement in the action program for bee protection presented by the administration in 2019. Now that the city has successfully taken part in the national “Nature City” competition and was able to collect prize money of 25,000 euros on November 25, 2020, it is now starting to implement specific measures.
Emmy-Lanzke-Weg planned in Vahrenheide
There are already quite a few flowering meadows in urban areas. The model project “Overcoming borders for more insect protection” is now intended to show how this can also be achieved together with the housing industry. The municipal housing company Hanova is a natural partner.
Part of the green corridor in the area of the Emmy-Lanzke-Weg in Vahrenheide is planned for the project, which was presented to the Council’s Environment Committee on Monday. Between the light rail line in the west and the toboggan run in the east, flower strips, nesting facilities and winter habitats for insects are to be created by the end of 2022 – depending on the suitability of the areas. The measures on the local areas are to be coordinated with those of Hanova.
Food supply for insects
“It is very nice how people are trying to get the housing industry on board,” said the environmental spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, Philipp Kreisz. “Hannover is well on the way to becoming an insect-friendly city.”
From this autumn, flowering meadows are to be created in the urban green spaces and strips of lawn are to be upgraded to species-rich flower and herb breeds. This should improve the food supply for insects. In addition, seven nesting mounds made of sand and dead wood are to be created. Mowing is usually done there only once or twice a year, only three times in a narrow area along the footpath.
