The film
Born on the occasion of the exhibition curated by Beatrice Avanzi and Tiziano Panconi, that the Mart of Rovereto dedicated to the well-known Ferrara painter to celebrate the ninetieth anniversary of his death, the film traces the salient and iconic moments of the extraordinary life of Giovanni Boldini (Ferrara 1842 – Paris 1931) between Florence, Venice (where he was a member of the sponsoring committee of the first Art Biennale), London, New York, Paris but also Montecarlo, the French Riviera and Sankt Moritz, where he used to go on holiday.
The articulated screenplay of the film intertwines various levels of the narrative to draw a lively and faithful portrait of the artist, combining unpublished images from private archives with footage from the exhibition set up at the Mart, footage of the time with recreated scenes created to relive the sophisticated atmosphere and the elegant style of the time, also thanks to the narrative voices of the actors of cinema and theater Alessia Patregnani and Francesco Mastrorilli.
The documentary includes speeches by Vittorio Sgarbi, art historian and President of the Mart, the curators Beatrice Avanzi and Tiziano Panconi, Annalisa Casagranda (Education and cultural mediation area of the Mart), and, as guest star, Cecilia Matteucci Lavarini, collector and icon of Alta Moda, who recently took part in a video advertising for Roger Vivier together with Chaterine Deneuve.
The artist
Giovanni Boldini attended many intellectuals of the time including Gabriele D’Annunzio, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Giuseppe Verdi and again Edgar Degas (with whom he visits Spain and Morocco), Edouard Manet, Alfred Sisley, John Sargent, Marcel Proust.
In 1871 he settled permanently in Paris, precisely during the Belle Époque, the most fascinating period of European culture between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Halfway between the most sumptuous luxury and the eccentric and smug elegance of the Dandies, Boldini was the most famous Italian artist in the world, giving rise to a real Boldini mania: princesses, countesses, actresses and wealthy international travelers came to Paris from all over Europe and America just to be portrayed by him.
Before starting to work on his paintings, Boldini used to make sure that his illustrious models wore an outfit that matched his impeccable taste, personally accompanying them from Cartier and Boucheron for the purchase of sumptuous jewels and accessories and in couturier ateliers such as Paul Poiret, Charles Frederick Worth, Jeanne Lanvin and Jacques Doucet.
