The volume of production at the new field may reach 3.5 billion cubic meters of gas in 2023. Turkey is increasing this figure to 15 billion cubic meters per year within four years after the start of work, today it is about a quarter of production in Europe. Donmez notes that Turkey’s demand for natural gas may increase by a quarter in 2021, to 60 billion cubic meters.
Turkey has decided to cut costs from imports and reduce purchases abroad. Russia is among the country’s major supply partners. At the same time, the government and gas importers, such as the state-owned company Botas International, are negotiating with the Russian side about a possible extension of a long-term contract for the supply of eight billion cubic meters of gas.
Russia supplies gas to Turkey via the Blue Stream and Turkish Stream, which runs through the Black Sea. Moreover, the latter route serves not only for import into the country itself, but also for transit to Europe. The total capacity of Turkish Stream today is 31.5 billion cubic meters.
