17th Salzburg Europe Summit – September 26-28, 2021
Vienna / New York / Salzburg (OTS) –
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz:
It could never be the goal of a government to permanently restrict people’s fundamental rights and freedoms.
The restrictions to fight the corona pandemic could represent a massive challenge for the Austrian government, similar Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz at the 17th defeat. He is optimistic. The fight against the pandemic in particular has shown how important it is for all levels – Europe, member states and regions – to work together.
Deputy UN Secretary General welcomes Austria’s climate goals.
The new UN Secretary General Amina Mohammed on the occasion of the 17th Salzburg Europe Summit is pleased that the EU is putting its concern for the climate and the environment as well as social cohesion at the center of its path to a new normal after the pandemic. Amina Mohammed especially welcomed die easy Austria to become climate neutral by 2040 and to achieve one hundred percent renewable energies by 2030. The global recovery is patchy and uneven, which is compounded by uneven distribution of vaccines. The developed economies need their solidarity with the developing countries to translate into meaningful concrete measures.
IRE chairman urges evaluation of the corona measures at all levels.
The chairman of the Institute of the Regions of Europe (IRE), the former Salzburger Landesmann Franz Schausberger, suggested in his opening speech, now as soon as possible with an ongoing improvement of all measures that have been taken to combat Corona at all levels – EU, member states , Regions and municipalities – to begin. However, the evaluation should be carried out by expert groups and not by political bodies such as parliamentary committees of inquiry. Objectivity and not political hack-hack is required. This is the only way to learn from this crisis for future pandemics. In the fight against the corona pandemic, no government was able to draw suggestions from previous pandemics. The last global crisis of this kind was the Spanish flu a hundred years ago, from which, however, no suggestions for action could be derived.
The “comeback” of Europe that has now been initiated should mean a return to everything as it was before Corona. Much in our society did not go right before Corona, including Schausberger.
