Eugenio Viola, chosen by Minister Franceschini as curator of the Italian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale of art next year, on the basis of a triad selected by the Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity, has communicated the name of the artist who will exhibit in the large space at the Tese of the Arsenale: it is Gian Maria Tosatti.
And Bergamo knows him, as the president explains Stefano Raimondi: “We of Contemporary art in white we can only agree and be more than happy for Gian Maria Tosatti, the artist with whom we shared the long journey of the last Italian Council with the episodes of Odessa and of Istanbul of his My heart is a void, the void is a mirror“.
The film My heart is a void, the void is a mirror – Odessa episode was resented to Bergamo Film Meeting 2021 as part of the collaboration between the Festival and The Blank, in fact. It was made on the shores of Lake Odessa by Gian Maria Tosatti, in conversation with Cristina Rota, project manager The Blank e Lorenzo Quagliozzi. And it is a film born from the backstage of a great environmental work made in Ukraine by Tosatti during the hardest phases of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I consider Gian Maria Tosatti’s research – explained Viola – unique in the Italian artistic panorama. His performative training between Warsaw and Pontedera has converged in his work which is configured in the form of complex aesthetic devices that involve different media and daring steps of scale “.
While waiting to see what Tosatti and Viola will bring to the Biennale, the significant fact remains that the project proposes, after years of group exhibitions, a single artist. “I proposed only one artist – concluded Eugenio Viola – to equate us with the standards of the other national participations and it also seemed interesting to me to try to build a unitary discourse between me and the artist I invited”.
