From May to October 2018, a team of archaeologists excavated, a stone’s throw from the health buildings of the CH Annecy Genevois, the site which today hosts the Nursing Training Institute.
The excavation showed that this small hill 200 m long has been occupied at least since the 2nd BC. The most notable remains, however, are later. They bear witness to “Petit-Metz”, a medieval parish organized around the Saint Didier church, destroyed in the 19th century. It is the cemetery of this medieval parish, in which the inhabitants of the place were buried from the 10th to the 18th century AD, which was the heart of the archaeological operation. He delivered nearly 600 tombs installed around the remains of the church. The excavation and study of these graves allow us to discover the successive inhabitants of “Petit Metz” over nearly eight centuries, from their funeral practices to their state of health.
Overlooking the graves, the archaeological study also retraced the history and developments of two old buildings preserved on the site: a mansion from the modern period and a small bourgeois house from the end of the Middle Ages.
The analysis of the data acquired thanks to this operation coming to an end, this conference proposes to present the main results on the site of their discovery.
