San Marino launches Montegiardino candidacy for Best Tourism Village
SAN MARINO (ITALPRESS) – On 27 September the World Tourism Day of the United Nations World Tourism Organization UNWTO is celebrated, which for 2021 addresses the theme “Tourism for inclusive growth”. The Department of Tourism and Culture and the Secretariat of State for Tourism have planned two important initiatives at two different times of the day.
At 10 am on Monday 27 September, in an online meeting, all the members of the Territorial Tourist Board, a project born with the support of the UNWTO, will participate in the launch of a new phase of the “The Lovely places” initiative which includes, among others things, the publication of the first promotional video and all the web pages of the participating municipalities and castles.
At 6 pm in Montegiardino, in the Piazza (at the Confucius Institute in case of bad weather) a toast was organized and a meeting between the Secretariat of State for Tourism, the Montegiardino Castle Council, the economic activities and the inhabitants of the Castle to announce the candidacy of Castello di Montegiardino to the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO project.
The Montegiadino Castle has in fact accepted the invitation that the Secretariat of State for Tourism and the San Marino focal point of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Mauro Maiani addressed to the Castles of the Republic of San Marino asking them if there was the will to participate in the “Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO” initiative which intends to underline the importance of rural tourism and small villages, enhancing them through a project.
The initiative is structured to recognize small towns (with less than 15,000 inhabitants) that are characterized in terms of cultural and natural resources, promotion and conservation of cultural resources, economic, social and environmental sustainability, tourism potential and development and integration of the chain value, governance and priority of tourism, infrastructure and connectivity, health, safety and protection and which could offer tourists sustainable, green, outdoor experiences, accommodation in line with the territory, food, local crafts and typical agri-food productions.
Each nation within the UNWTO could enroll three villages in the project (for San Marino only Montegiardino has prepared the candidacy, for Italy, among the three candidates there is also Rocca Pietore) and UNWTO itself, at the end of the selections, will choose which villages deserve the “Best Village” label for exceptional rural tourist destination events with recognized cultural and natural assets, which preserve and promote rural and community values, products and lifestyle and have a clear commitment to innovation and sustainability in all its economic, social and environmental aspects. Furthermore, candidates can be chosen for a refresher program supported by UNWTO if they meet all the criteria but are shown a willingness to improve and grow.
Furthermore, all the chosen destinations will join the “Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO” network which will offer a space for the exchange of experiences and good practices, learning and opportunities.
