President expresses condolences over death of writer Leonardas Gutauskas: it is a big Internet for the whole of Lithuania
According to the head of the country, this is the loss of a large network for the artist’s family, the art community and Lithuania as a whole.
“We have lost a prominent and diverse creator, whose artistic biography is an entire epoch in the history and culture of our country. “Leonardo Gutauskas’ work – painting, prose or poetry – was dominated by unique, deep and transparent thinking, which has always returned us to the meaning and power of eternal values,” said the President.
According to the head of the country, L. Gutauskas was able to uniquely and closely combine several artistic genres, thus creating a unique and multi-layered creative world, embodying a person, a nation, the search for the identity of the state.

According to Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė, L. Gutauskas’ works will remain in the Lithuanian Gold Fund for Art.
“This diverse talent has left the world, the owner of a unique and recognizable drawing. The writer and artist were able to masterfully depict both sacral and simple phenomena and combine them into a unique whole. L. Gutauskas’ work will remain in the Lithuanian Art Gold Fund for a long time. I sincerely sympathize with my relatives and all the fans of L. Gutauskas’ talent, “says the Head of the Government.
The Speaker of the Seimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, in her turn, wants Lithuania to lose the most outstanding and unique artists.
“Leonardas Gutauskas, the creator of incomprehensible depth and talent, has left countless works of painting, prose and poetry for future generations, and many generations of children have grown up with his illustrated books. I sincerely sympathize with the artist’s family, relatives, and a wide circle of fans of his work, not only in Lithuania, but also in foreign countries, ”it is written in her sympathy.

The writer, poet and painter, winner of the Lithuanian National Culture and Prize, Leonardas Gutauskas, died. Her son Tadas Gutauskas shared his painful loss on his facebook account.
L. Gutauskas was born in 1938 in Kaunas, studied scenography at the State Art Institute. Since 1965 he wants exhibitions, in 1981 he was awarded the LSSR State Prize.
In 1998 the artist was awarded the Government Culture and Art Prize, in 2001 – the National Culture and Art Prize for works of prose and poetry.
In literature, L. Gutauskas made his debut in 1961 with a collection of poems “My Horses Lost”. According to critics, his poems are characterized by a pantheistic closeness to nature, a picturesque image.
The creator has published nearly two dozen illustrated poetry books for children, seven novels, poetry books and lyrics for music. Since 1989, L. Gutauskas has belonged to the group of 24 painters. He has painted Lithuanian artists, religious, mythological and abstract compositions.
„L. Gutauskas’ painting stands out with its unique interpretation of common human themes – eternity, the history and memory of the nation, human development.
The paintings are dominated by a sacral, solemn mood, the images are metaphorical, based on poetic images, ancient Greeks, symbols and images of Eastern civilizations, Lithuanian folk art, and natural motifs have been uniquely recreated, ”writes the Universal Lithuanian Encyclopedia.
The works of L. Gutauskas are owned by the Lithuanian Art Museum, the National MK Čiurlionis Art Museum, and foreign (Russian) museums.
