The prosecution announced Monday night that the 52-year-old is suspected of causing a fatal car accident. Due to fatigue and inability to drive safely, he did not drive at a safe distance from the right edge of the road and drove into a meadow along the highway. The vehicle then slipped and overturned on its right side.

The investigating judge ordered a month of detention for the driver due to the danger that the driver would leave Croatia.

Ten people died in the accident, ten have serious injuries, some are life-threatening, the prosecution said.

On Monday, 26 lightly injured people were released from the hospital in Slavonski Brod. Two passengers are in intensive care and two of the dead have not yet been identified.

The driver admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel

The driver admitted to investigators on Sunday that he had fallen asleep behind the wheel. He was arrested the same day.

The 52-year-old’s lawyers told reporters today that the driver did not mention in a conversation with them that he was supposed to fall asleep while driving the bus.

Proceedings against the driver are to be conducted in Croatia, unless Kosovo requires, on the basis of interstate agreements, that the trial take place in the driver’s homeland. According to Croatian law, the driver faces up to 15 years in prison.
