the abandonment of dogs and cats is on the rise, warns the Strasbourg SPA
With the release of the third lockdown in May and the return to a more normal situation, people are starting to abandon their pets again. The Strasbourg Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) is sounding the alarm, while its kennels are once again filling up with dogs and cats.
During the confinement, they stayed at home, to keep company with their family animals who remained in telework. They were a good excuse to allow these families to go out a bit, via the walks mentioned in derogatory certificates. And then, morale was low: it was good to have a four-legged companion with you …
It is no longer so relevant with deconfinement. And dropouts are on the rise. A situation denounced by the Animal protection Society (SPA) of Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin). She held its traditional open doors these Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 June 2021, to have its residents adopted and to recruit volunteers (the previous ones had been canceled because of the covid).
The opportunity to collect funds from onlookers coming to discover the faces of dogs and cats helping to find a new family. But also and above all to have these animals adopted … and find volunteers (walking, feeding, etc.) in addition. There are up to 800 to shoot each year at the SPA kennel in the Cronenbourg district (behind Ikéa, see on the map below), but only a small decrease comes with regularity.
The “life before” has therefore resumed: face-to-face work, new possibilities for going on vacation … Sometimes also loss of a job, making it impossible to meet the needs of your animal. Nearly 50 dogs are currently sleeping in the kennel (not to mention a hundred cats).
By way of comparison, the 112 accommodation places contained only … 17 dogs during the summer of 2020. The current summer period is conducive to abandonment, and the association is in the process of waiting: it does not know if it is. there will be a lot of people going on vacation.
This summer period merges with the end of spring, when many births of kittens and puppies take place. It is often a crucial moment for the Strasbourg SPA (independent of the national SPA), who wants to have the most adoptions – under conditions – possible before being overwhelmed.
And among these, Vader. A cat who loves to exercise … and receive hugs. The five-year-old arrived at the shelter on March 30, 2021, and he should the joy of anyone who would take him under their wing. Why not you ?
