What a view! Probably the most picturesque train journey in Salzburg by the experienced man with the Schafbergbahn. You start at the valley station in St. Wolfgang, which is located directly on the shores of the turquoise-blue Wolfgangsee. The beautiful lake and the picturesque backdrop invite you to dream. But if you get on the cogwheel train, you will be overwhelmed by the view of Lake Wolfgang and the Salzkammergut on the 35-minute ride. The goal of the almost six kilometers long route is the Schafberg, which is 1783 meters above sea level. The mountain is one of the most beautiful vantage points in Austria, as it offers a 360 degree view over the Salzkammergut. With a bit of luck you can see 13 (!) On a clear day.

Ship, ahoy! We continue with the ship from St. Wolfgang to St. Gilgen. Visitors have the opportunity to spontaneously “hop on / hop off” at seven stops. The view of the Falkensteinwand, which is very popular with climbers and cliff divers, is particularly impressive. Our trip was musically accompanied by three musicians in traditional costume, which made the experience even more rustic. Anyone who would like to experience something similar or are interested in a special kind of culinary experience has the “Pleasure Autumn” the opportunity to enjoy a 3-course menu with live music and a wonderful view of the places on the illuminated lakeshore.
Tip for your short break in Salzburg: float over the roofs of Salzburg on the fortress railway
Back in the city of Salzburg, the fortress train takes you up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress in less than a minute. Even during the journey you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city of Salzburg Werfen and when you arrive at the top, the view over the roofs of the city is astonishing. Upon request, it is also possible to get off at the middle station in a short time. A great option for everyone who wants to explore the partial walk on Mönchsberg on foot or who fancy a romantic one.
Short trip tip: acquire knowledge at the water mirror museum
Anyone who walks up the Mönchsberg will also pass the Water Mirror Museum. The interactive water museum invites visitors on a multimedia and interactive discovery tour on the trail of water. Visitors who are particularly interested in technology will get their money’s worth there. What is really impressive is that the museum is part of the Mönchsberg elevated tank, which, with a capacity of 25,000 m³, represents a physical part of the water supply for the city of Salzburg. The water tank is visible in the museum and looks like an oversized underground pool.
Tip: Dress warmly – it is only a cool 12 degrees Celsius in the museum itself.
Salzburg sights: end the short trip with a ride on the Mönchsberg lift
After so much hunger comes hunger and tiredness too. What could be better than a little refreshment? The M32 restaurant is located directly at the Mönchsberg lift. From the spacious terrace you can enjoy a magnificent view over the city of Salzburg. At the end of our short break in Salzburg, we tried what is probably the most traditional dessert in town: Salzburger Nockerl. Our conclusion: Heavenly-sweet and airy-light, you have to taste it! If you are still in the mood for a little culture, you can go directly to the Museum of Modern Art from here or simply take the Mönchsberg lift back down and explore the city.
