Peskov: Russia cannot interfere in the case of Novatek top manager Gitway in the USA – Economy and business
MOSCOW, September 24. / TASS /. Russia cannot interfere in the tax evasion case initiated in the United States against Novatek’s deputy chairman of the board, Mark Gitway, but is ready to assist him as a citizen of the Russian Federation. Press secretary of the head of the Russian state Dmitry Peskov told reporters about this statement on Friday.
“This person is also a citizen of the Russian Federation, if I understand correctly, he has dual citizenship, of course, we are interested in his fate, the circumstances of the case. The Kremlin.
At the same time, he added, Jeetway is also a US citizen. “In this case, we have no way of interfering with these processes,” Peskov points out.
As the press secretary assured, for Moscow in this situation “it is an absolute priority for all legal rights to legal protection of citizens of the Russian Federation to be ensured.”
About the Jeetway case
As previously stated in the US Department of Justice, Jeetway was arrested in Florida, he is accused of hiding assets in order to evade taxes. According to tax officials, from 2005 to 2016, Jitway used offshore accounts to hide his assets in order to avoid paying taxes. The amount of funds that Jitway rocks from the US authorities currently exceeded $ 93 million. During the period of alleged fraud, Jitway registered accounts in foreign banks for his then spouse, who was a Russian citizen. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
Novatek said Friday it is not making any official inquiries or other documents from US or foreign authorities regarding Jeetway. The company is currently investigating the circumstances of the incident. The situation “will have no impact on the company’s activities,” Novatek assured.
Jitway has been working in Russia since 1995, becoming a partner of PwC Global Energy. He started his career at Novatek in 2003. In August 2007, he was elected member of the company’s management board, and since July 2010, he has held the position of deputy chairman of the board of Novatek. In 2019, Jitway received Russian citizenship.
