Pays de la Loire praises bioNGV

Within the framework of Pays de la Loire Energy Tour 2021, several actors of methanation and waste collection are income on the benefits of bioNGV for all types of household refuse dumpsters (BOM). The verdict is clear: biomethane is the perfect carbon-based solution for this type of service and many communities, including Saumur, swear by natural gas.

CNG is currently the benchmark alternative energy for heavy mobility. Almost one in 20 trucks already runs on gas, which corresponds to the part of the electric in the sector of the passenger car! At the same time, the share of renewable gas in the overall French consumption of NGV continues to increase, reaching 17.5% last year (compared to 0% in 2014).

All the main players in waste collection have already tried NGV and today, 11% of the BOM fleet use this type of fuel. A trend that is accelerating. For 3 years, 20% of new registrations of refuse collection vehicles have been NGV vehicles. From Strasbourg to Toulouse and from Vannes to Grenoble, we can no longer count the communities that turn to this carbon-free energy, whatever their size.

The Saumur residents in full climate plan

In the Pays de la Loire, the agglomeration of Saumur Val de Loire sets the tone. Since 2017, the recovery of bio-waste has been on the agenda. After investing in an anaerobic digestion unit, the agglomeration opened a public refueling station fr bioNGV locally produced. The municipal household waste collection service uses it for its four BOM trucks, for light vehicles and even a 44 T tractor.

“Everything went well in the adoption of NGV for waste collection because we informed the staff and involved the teams from the start of the project ” Explain Aurélie Kaminski, Managing Director of Saumur Agglopropreté. “It made them feel involved in this transition, and together we have anticipated organizational changes induced by the switch to NGV (touring time, refueling, maintenance, etc.). We have also worked with manufacturers, in particular on driver training and consumption monitoring. This allowed the whole team to be ready and satisfied with this new energy! ” she continues.

the bioNGV has a place in or in the renewal of public fleets

Today, communities are increasingly forced to abandon diesel, and therefore adopt CNG / bioNGV. The 2019 European directive, which sets obligations for the renewal of public transport fleets, has just been transposed into French law.

“Public contracts that use heavy vehicles must now devote 10% of their fleet to alternative energies, during renewal. This share will increase to 15% from 2025. This constraint will force manufacturers to expand the offer of heavy goods vehicles, which is already starting to be very complete in terms of dumpsters ”explains François Dedieu, expert in urban cleaning at GRDF.

IVECO, Volvo, Scania, Mercedes and Renault Trucks offer very good specialized vehicles running on CNG. In addition, with the generalization of Low Emission Zones (ZFE) to all cities with more than 150,000 inhabitants, diesel will gradually be banned from communities.

And with refueling solutions more and more supplied, ride at bioNGV is not as complicated as it used to be! 171 public stations are currently in service in France, 70 are planned or under construction and a new public station opens every week. In Pays de la Loire, a dozen stations are in operation and this figure will double in the next 18 months. Real good momentum for natural gas fuel.
