Month: The left has no illusions that the problems will end after Janša’s departure
Coordinator of the Left Luka Mesec said at a party congress in Sežana that the Left was the only party of the future in Slovenia because it had no illusions that after the government left Janez Janša the end of the problems that the web of crises transcends.
The right has also become vampiric, no longer embarrassed to revive the spirits of fascism that we thought were finally buried in Europe in 1945.
The Left will do everything to make the future free, democratic and ecological. “Capitalism is entangled in a spiral of crises and history is open. Yes, we live in interesting times, but we live and act without fear. We are aware that we are resisting forces that are currently stronger than us and that are dragging us into the dark for the last benefits. future, “ said in an address to Congress, which, due to epidemiological constraints, was partly conducted through the Left’s online channels, Mesec said. According to him, perhaps the biggest problem at the moment has emerged in the last decade: “The right has also become vampiric, no longer embarrassed to revive the spirits of fascism that we thought were finally buried in Europe in 1945.”
Not only Slovenia under Janša’s government, which according to Mesa is currently the biggest problem in the country, but the whole world is facing a crisis of democracy, undemocratic regimes are growing or politicians with such ambitions are thriving. Instead of looking to the future and talking about how to solve the web of crises in which our world has become entangled, we are ruled by people who add fuel to these problems, according to Mesca.
Month: We need to become independent from self-proclaimed independence fighters
In his opinion, in Slovenia “the same people rule who saw the disintegration of Yugoslavia and the new Slovenian state as a special opportunity for the last benefit”. “Just as they stole social property in the 1990s, today they would plunder what is left in common – the state, water, health care …” he said. Therefore, in his opinion, the first step towards the future is “to become independent from those self-proclaimed independence fighters who do not stop us from becoming independent”.
But at the same time, he emphasizes the need to revive the debate on the future. Because one has to ask not only how to achieve early elections as soon as possible, but also what to do next. In his opinion, the Left is the only party of the future in Slovenia because they do not create illusions, “that after the fall of the Janša government, everything will suddenly be fine and the situation will return to normal, as it is called in the political environment.”. “It will not be because the web of crises we are describing goes far beyond this government,” he warned.
According to Mesca, the topic of today’s congress is therefore how to put on the agenda topics that have fallen out of it, such as the climate and environmental crisis, the future of work, inequality and wealth sharing, the future of democracy and human rights, technologies.

For a free and democratic future
The Left is determined to do everything in its power to make the future free, democratic and ecological, he announced. According to him, the illustrations must first be abandoned so that they can remain the same, and many things will have to be radically changed. He added, however, that politics is community building, coalitions. Today’s congress, in his opinion, showed that the Left enjoys the great trust of intellectuals, fighters for human and labor rights, environmental movements, and forward-thinking people. According to him, such a movement ready to build coalitions and make meaningful compromises.
He is convinced that hope must be restored to a policy that is making the toothless tiger everywhere in the world in the 21st century. He also believes that the field of democracy needs to be expanded, which should not be just elections every four years.
The month further stressed that the Left is not a party against the economy, which has encouraged their opponents. He argues that they are for all who create, so against rentiers, those who make a living from the work of others. It is also necessary, he said, to create space for young people and address inequality in all its aspects. According to Mesca, the left is also a party that is fully aware of the scale of the circumstances and the climate crisis. They have drafted a climate law that they intend to coordinate with other parties and relevant stakeholders.
Great intellectual hinterland and economic democracy
In a statement to the press on the sidelines of the congress, Mesec assessed that no other party in Slovenia has such a background of intellectuals, environmental movements and human rights activists. The participants in today’s congress actually addressed the philosopher, among others Slavoj Žižek v Mladen Dolar and some trade unionists, among them the general secretary of the Sviz trade union Branimir Štrukelj,, Goran Lukić from the Workers’ Counseling Center and Tea Jarc from the Young Plus union.
“We have shown that we are ready to take responsibility,” said Moon and recalled the program conference at the congress. This, he said, is one of the most lively parts of the party. As he said in his congressional address, the Left has prepared a climate law, and they are also raising the issue of cooperatives and economic democracy. They have drafted a law that will enable employees of small and medium-sized entrepreneurs to set up a cooperative after the owners of their companies retire, if they do not have a successor. At the same time, they would give the owner a tax incentive to sell the company to these employees. The Left believes that this is how they will build domestic ownership, Mesec said in a statement.
According to the pre-congress resolution of the SDS, which reverberated a few days ago and in which the SDS warns against extremists in the Left, Mesec today reiterated that the Left is the first defender of democracy in Slovenia. As he said, they are resisting violations of the constitutional order and want room to choose democratic options for enlargement. Meanwhile, according to him, the archive of violations of Janez Janša’s unconstitutional activities is too large to be planned now.
While all the other parties have come to terms with the fact that our country is a hostage of capital, we are looking for ways to bring people back.
Violeta Tomić: We are at the lowest level since independence
Deputy Coordinator of the Left and Member of Parliament Violeta Tomić In her address, she expressed her belief that Slovenia was at its lowest level since independence. “But they say the night is darkest before dawn. But for it to be necessary to fight and defeat this evil which, through the crisis of capitalism under the guise of an epidemic, is growing into Nazism.”
She, too, believes that the Left is the party of the future. “While all the other parties have come to terms with the fact that our country is a hostage to capital, we are looking for ways to bring people back.” According to her, the left has been proving that it has been since the entry into the National Assembly “impossible possible”. Among the party’s successes, she mentioned, among other things, an increase in the minimum wage and an increase in the minimum social assistance and the minimum pension.
The left is ready to lead the government
“The darkness that covers Slovenia will not last forever. The morning dawn will reveal all the damage that is still raging by the far right, and even more so missed opportunities,” however, said the program conference coordinator of the Left Sašo Slaček Brlek. He stressed that after the next elections, the Left is not ready to participate in the government, but also to lead. “If not us, then who?” he asked. Therefore, according to him, they must be prepared in the party if it is exposed to the content that the party advocates. Among other things, this is a new ecological program, in which the Left has found new pages in this area, he added.
Also the coordinator of the program environmental group Luka Omladič highlighted the climate law they will draft as one of the fundamental projects of the parties in the next term. According to him, the proposal is a long way off and is based on a draft prepared by the best experts in the field of climate policy in Slovenia. The proposal will set decarbonisation targets as a legally binding norm, but also provides for the establishment of an independent climate crisis council, which will not “another toothless advisory body”.

Left – green future
The leading theme of the congress was named Left, green future, and they talked about the future of work, around and democracy. Given the existing programs and the emergence of new green parties, Moon said in a statement on the sidelines of Congress that it will only start operating parties to show who is and who will be green.
Due to epidemiological restrictions, the congress was held partly through the web channels of the Left, and the work in Kosovel’s home in Sežana.
The congress address was given by the coordinator of the party Mesec, and the congress participants were also addressed by the deputy coordinator Violeta Tomić, program conference coordinator Sašo Slaček Brlek and the coordinator of the environmental program group Luka Omladič.
The congress will try to open up topics that are currently emerging in the political space, the Moon announced in a statement on Tuesday. In the political space, according to him, they are only complaining about resolving the crisis that caused the current government. He listed the crisis of democracy, the “hanging” parliament, the media and institutions.
The moon is running again
The Danes thus began the election of a directly elected 25-member party council and members of the party’s commissions and committees. The elections will be held at a distance and will be confirmed within seven days with the possibility of extension for an additional seven days if the quorum is not met. The results of the elections will be announced by the party council on the basis of the report of the electoral commission, the Left explained. The party council will then elect an executive committee and a party coordinator and deputy coordinator. Luka Mesec is running again for the position of party coordinator.
