Life expectancy at birth increased to 81.06 years in Portugal
Life expectancy at birth in Portugal increased to 81.06 years for the total population, with the North being the region with the highest values, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
In the 2018-2020 triennium, life expectancy at birth for Portugal was estimated at 78.07 years for men and 83.67 years for women, which means an increase of 1.90 and 1.48 years, respectively, in relation to the estimated values for 2008-2010.
“Life expectancy at birth continues to be higher for women, but the gap for men has been decreasing, now being 5.60 years (6.02 in 2008-2010)”, says INE in the publication ” Mortality Tables in Portugal – Regional breakdown (2018-2020) “.
The last 10 years have seen improvements in life expectancy at birth in all regions. However, the biggest increases occurred in the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores, with longevity gains of over two years.
According to the data, life expectancy at birth in Portugal was estimated at 78.07 years for men and 83.67 years for women, in the three-year period analyzed.
The greatest differences in longevity between men and women were registered in Madeira and the Azores, where women can expect to live, on average, 6.89 and 6.82 years longer than men, respectively.
In the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon (AML) and in the North region, the smallest differences in longevity between genders were observed (5.41 and 5.44 years, respectively).
The highest values of life expectancy at 65 years were observed in the AML for the total population, men and women (19.97 years, 18.05 years and 21.54 years, respectively).
However, it was in the Azores that there was the greatest increase in this indicator in the last decade for the total population and for women: from 16.18 to 17.63 years and from 17.71 to 19.24 years, respectively.
The greatest increase in life expectancy at age 65 for men occurred in Alentejo: from 16.33 years to 17.68 years.
The greatest differences in longevity at age 65 between men and women, in 2018-2020, were registered in Madeira and the Algarve, where women can expect to live, on average, 4.38 years longer and 3.77 years longer, respectively. than men, while in Alentejo there was a smaller difference between sexes (3.17 years).
Information on life expectancy at birth reveals that in nine of the 25 NUTS III regions the national value (81.06 years) was exceeded in the 2018-2020 period.
However, in 11 regions (Cávado, Coimbra Region, Leiria Region, Ave, Viseu Dão-Lafões, Porto Metropolitan Area, Aveiro Region, Middle Tagus, AML, Terras de Trás-os-Montes and Alto Minho) they verified values of life expectancy at birth above 81 years.
The lowest life expectancy at birth was found in the Autonomous Regions and Baixo Alentejo, where life expectancy did not reach 79 years.
In the last 10 years, all NUTS III regions recorded gains in longevity at birth, with the largest increase in Beira Baixa (2.57 years) and the smallest in the Terras de Trás-os-Montes region (0.95 years) .
The results for the 2018-2020 period show that 17 NUTS III regions surpassed the national value (19.69 years).
