Hungary: Protests and condemnations from Brussels after the ban on raising awareness of young people about LGBTIQ
The Hungarian authorities initially wanted to toughen penalties for child abuse, but later amended the educational process to ban the dissemination of content aimed at raising awareness of the LGBTIQ community and promoting homosexuality and gender reassignment.
The protected right to child pornography in content that depicts one’s sexuality for ultimate purposes or encourages deviation from external identity, gender reassignment or homosexuality should not be made available to children under the age of 18, the law says.
In addition, it prohibits books, films, and other content for children and adolescents that include an external identity that represents a departure from heterosexuality and the mention of the possibility of gender reassignment.
As early as December last year, the Hungarian parliament approved the entry of a traditional family into the constitution and for same-sex couples de facto prohibit adoptions.
Due to the law, they will not change educational programs
Hungarian civil society organizations organized protests against the new law restricting access to LGBTIQ information at the beginning of the current disputed legislation. Protesters were critical of the prime minister Viktor Orban, as it deprives citizens of their rights, as when trying to present a freedom fighter.
“The law links crimes against children to the LGBTIQ community in a cunning and evil way, “is the head of the Hungarian office of Amnesty International David Vig told reporters in front of a symbolic ten-meter-high rainbow heart in the center of Budapest. He assured that due to the law, they will not change educational programs and camps.
Members of the LGBTIQ Hatter Society Rights Group Luca Dudits however, he accused Orban of depriving citizens of their rights and at the same time portraying himself as a freedom fighter.
Due to the law, RTL Klub, among other televisions, violated its posters for the popular series, in which a homosexual couple also appears. The sticker covering the posters states that they are concerned that the law restricts freedom of speech and discriminates against non-heterosexual members of society.
The European Parliament strongly condemned the law
The European Parliament has strongly condemned the new Hungarian law, which, according to the European Commission, discriminates against LGBTIQ people.
The new regulations clearly violate the values, principles and law of the EU, write the resolutions of the European Parliament adopted today. In it, MEPs and Member States of the Union also called for urgent legal action.
MEPs adopted the resolution by 459 votes to 147, with 58 abstentions.
Parliament emphasizes that this is not an isolated case, but “shows that there is a deliberate and deliberate phasing out of fundamental rights in Hungary“, where campaigns of hostility against LGBTIQ persons and disinformation campaigns carried out by the state are a postal tool of political censorship.
These human rights violations are part of a broader political agenda to undermine democracy and the rule of law, including freedom of the media, and should be seen as a systemic violation of the EU’s values, the resolution said.
Orban: The EU will not convince Hungary
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has responded to allegations from the EU in messages that they will fail to persuade Hungary to abandon the law. He stressed that his government would not allow LGBTIQ community activists into schools.
“The European Parliament and the European Commission want to bring LGBTIQ activists and organizations to kindergartens and schools. Hungary does not want that,“is a message via Facebook.
He is convinced that this is a matter of state sovereignty. “Brussels bureaucrats have no say here, no matter what they do, we will not allow LGBTIQ activists among our children,“he added.
In Brussels, it calls for Hungary to be denied access to European funds
The adoption of the law has sparked criticism and demands for action against Hungary in the EU. The issue of LGBTIQ rights in the neighboring country was marked by the EU summit in June, and the law was also discussed by the European Parliament on Wednesday, which will adopt a resolution today. Many MEPs have been critical, with Liberals and Greens calling for Hungary to be denied access to European funds because of the law.
President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, which described the June law as a disgrace, shut down action again in Strasbourg on Wednesday. She emphasized that the European Commission would use all the leverage of the EU Treaty to protect the Union’s fundamental values if Hungary did not withdraw the disputed law. In doing so, it also introduced a mechanism for the conditions for the use of European funds, respecting the rule of law, which is due to enter into force in the autumn, and the importance of protecting European funds for recovery.
