Bergendahls tests driverless food transport

A project has been initiated to allow electric autonomous trucks to deliver food between Bergendahls Food and Autoport’s logistics center in Hässleholm. In addition to the sustainability aspect, the transport manager sees Andor Döme an economic benefit.

The project is a collaboration between Scania, Eon, Bergendahls Food and Autoport, among others. The consulting company has an important role.

– Our ambition is of course that our climate footprint, but we also see good opportunities for higher resource utilization of our vehicles, says Andor Döme, transport manager at Bergendahls Food, in a press release.

The project participants expect to have electrified autonomous truck transports in operation within one to two years.

The first step is a feasibility study with a local carrier. It has already begun. Later, the project will also try on regional carriers.

– We see that the development towards smart sustainable transport is too slow. By doing a sharp project, we want to show that technologies already exist, but it has a new way of thinking to accelerate the transition, says Magnus Sjöström, digitization expert at consultant Afry.

Further from the press release:

The project investigates everything from charging infrastructure with solar cells to what software development is needed for existing logistics, vehicle and navigation systems. For example, how electric self-driving vehicles can use the time for autonomous unloading and reloading to charge the batteries while they can be connected to Internet-based logistics systems.

The project is not just about technology. It will also develop economic and legal frameworks for a cohesive value chain. It should then be able to use other players in Sweden

Hässleholm is an important hub in the Öresund region and in Sweden.

The following actors are included in the project: Afry, Scania, Eon, Bergendahls Food, Autoport, Hässleholms kommun, Rymdstyrelsen, Hässleholms Energi, AI Innovation of Sweden, Wexoe, Regionfastigheter i Region Skåne, Future By Lund and Øresundsbro Konsoriet.
