A new railway station and an underpass to Žižkov have opened in Prague. Express trains will also be built in Zahradní Město
At the same time, a public transport stop opened in Průběžná Street under the new Prague-Zahradní Město railway station.
(Updated 11:00) Prague has a new railway station and a transfer hub from today at midnight. The trains started to stop in the newly built station of the Prague-Zahradní Město Railway Administration on the Prague-Benešov line, under which a public transport stop also opened in Průběžná Street.
The node is not completely finished yet, on the one hand, for example, escalators and approaches on the platform are still missing. Finished escalators and elevators do not work, as the father and child, who tried in vain to call the elevator, was convinced.
So far, only passenger and express trains stop at the station; from December, the southern expressways Vltava and Lužnice, which run between Prague and České Budějovice and České Velenice, respectively, will also start to be built here.
Thanks to the new station, trains will be much more convenient for trips around Prague.
“Nádraží Zahradní Město is an exemplary transfer terminal, where the transfer distance between rail and public transport has been shortened as much as possible. Thanks to the short interval of trains, the railway, in combination with connected public transport, offered the fastest connection of the Garden City area with the center of Prague, “ said Adam Scheinherr, Prague’s deputy for transport.
At the Nádraží Zahradní Město public transport stop, bus lines 101, 138, 175, 177 and 195 stop under the train station on common platforms with trams, which provide connections to the South and North Towns, to the areas of Malešice, Vinohrady, Petrovice or Spořilov.
The Prague-Zahradní Město station is part of the modernization of the 4th railway corridor between Vršovice and Hostivaří. Already last December, the Prague-Eden stop opened in the middle of Vršovice, and the Vršovice station is undergoing a complete reconstruction. The railway administration likens the construction of a corridor to the importance of building a metro.
At the same time, the railway administration today opened an underpass in Žižkov from Hlavní nádraží, which it has been building since last May. It is an extension of the northern underpass under the platform. Part of the construction is also preparation for the future construction of a new island platform.
The underpass now opens in Žižkov via the Churchill Square commercial center. It is possible to walk through the railway station from Vrchlický sady to Seifertova street and you still can’t get to the inappropriate U Bulhara crossroads. At the same time, illegal railing should stop.
“The extended subway helps others to the inhabitants of Vinohrady and Žižkov and those who work or study here. Their walking distance will be significantly reduced not only directly to the main railway station, but also to the city center, “said Jiří Svoboda, General Director of the Railway Administration.
Railway administration on the construction of the underpass
The implemented design is unique on the Czech railway network. The whole structure was made of exposed concrete, in place of the lights was created the architectural shape of the “helmet”. The shape was achieved using formwork printed on a 3D printer. The concreting itself took place from two mixtures of concrete, where the technological supplier of concrete determined the exact time when using the second mixture in order to achieve the correct appearance of the structure. The architects also designed the residential stairs on the access sidewalk, where people can sit in peace and watch the traffic at the train station.
