The world of the book Prague 2021 will welcome the literature of France, Poland and Belarus. The star guests are Mitchell, Adichie and Binet
The guest of honor is France. Among other things, there will be talk about the “joint” author Milan Kunder. Readers look forward to writing stars David Mitchell, Laurent Binet and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi. However, the winners of the European Union Prize for Literature will also present themselves. Two countries have earned a separate space: Poland will, among other things, recall its famous reporting school, Belarus is dedicated to the Literature section as the voice of freedom.
One of this year’s writing stars comes from France, who will present his work in person to Czech readers. Laurent Binet they won the jury of the prestigious Goncourt Prize, as well as later Czech readers, especially by looking at the background of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in the novel HHhH. The Book World Prague 2021 is accompanied by a translation of his novel Civilization Based on Alternative History. He will also debate historical fiction with a Czech author Alena Mornštajnova, which solves “what if” in the bestseller Listpad.
However, the varied world of French literature is also presented by other authors, many of which are known to Czech readers from translations: Muriel Barbery presents the new Rose itself, Pendy Diouf reveals theatrical “shamanism” and introduces French children’s literature Magali Le Huche and representatives of the publishing house Talents Hauts. Another great literary figure, who is also recognized both in the Czech Republic and in France, will not come in person, but he will still be talked about. We are talking about Milan Kunder. The author of his biography, among others, will talk about a Brno native whose second home in exile became France. Jean-Dominique Brierrer.
David Mitchell and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie attracted a lot of attention when announcing their names as guests of the Book World Prague 2021. English novelist, screenwriter and opera librettist David Mitchell critics and readers were especially impressed by the novel opus Atlas of Clouds. Among other things, he is also a co-writer of the fourth sequel to the cult film series Matrix. At the Book World Prague 2021 he will discuss his work, the meaning of literature and the role of stories and myths in everyday life.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie he gets the attention of the literary community with his autobiographical novel The American. Originally a Nigerian writer who lives alternately in the United States, she is a strong voice of contemporary African authors. In fiction and essays, he comments on the issue of race or gender. At the Book World Prague 2021, he will meet, among other things, a Czech novelist Viktoria Hanišová in the debate on issues of identity in the literature.
Poland deserves special attention, as it must be the honorary host of last year, but its festival presentation was affected by a pandemic. The replacement is this year’s rich program focused on Polish literature. The famous Polish reportage school, for example, gets the floor. They represent her experienced Witold Szabłowski, who will sign the book How to Feed a Dictator and a Promising Prose writer at the fair Martyna Bunda and her novelty Blue Cat from the independent region of Kashubia. He joins her in the debate on “heartless history.” Karin Lednická, which in the novel The Leaning Church from the Perspective of Women conveyed the hard history of Silesia.
A British reporter will also join the Polish program Jack Fairweather. Book The holder of the Costa Book Award wrote a biography of the “Polish superhero” from Auschwitz Witold Pilecký. In addition, illustrations for children and the centenary of the birth of sci-fi icon Stanisław Lem will be added to the Polish program.
The promotion of freedom, democracy and human rights are topics that have always been close to the World of Prague. Starting in the 26th year, they are inspired by them in a special section Literature as the Voice of Freedom. This time we are changing to Belarus. At the Exhibition Center, you will open a temporary Embassy of Independent Belarusian Culture, which covers author readings, meetings with authors, debates or a night of poetry and music. Two leading poets, among others, provide a view of Belarus: Andrej Chadanovič AND Dmitry Strocev. Set of mountains, for example, in the debate moderated Jáchym Topol.
The aim of the Book World Prague is to bring as much contemporary literature from various countries and regions as possible to the time and size of the limited space. Therefore, this year the fair also defined a special part for titles boasting the European Union Prize for Literature. The laureates will meet in Prague during the debate on European values Gunstein Bakke (Norway), Edina Szvoren (Hungary), Irene Solà (Catalonia) a Lucie Faulerová (Czechia).
From neighboring Slovakia, visitors from numerous literary expeditions introduce themselves, for example Vladimir Balla, winner of the Anasoft Litera award, or Peter Balko. He also boasts the same significant price. He will come from Denmark Anne Cathrine Bomann. A successful writer is also a psychologist, which she uses extensively in her work. Another Nordic author Mikko-Pekka Heikkinen it is not unknown to Czech readers. His gangster from the Lapland Reindeer Mafia received a Czech translation. And a novelist, essayist and journalist arrives from sunny Italy Sandro Veronesi. His novel The Power of the Past has been translated into fifteen languages, won several prestigious awards and has also undergone a film adaptation.
The traditional literary series is returning The book, prepared in cooperation with Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Both writers, translators and publishers accepted the invitation to increase the awareness of Czech readers about current literary events in German-speaking countries.
Almost five hundred points of the Book World Prague 2021 program also include exhibitions, events for children, educational programs for schools and the presentation of winning titles of literary awards, but above all a plethora of resounding names of Czech authors.
