Dan Brown for Novinky.cz: I am taking to Prague a work that I have been working on for thirty years
You are known for books that capture secrets, mostly historical ones. But your first symphony is about nature. Was it your idea to turn the book into a concert?
Yes, the thought occurred to me when I was a lot, a lot younger. It’s been thirty years. My mom was a musician, a pianist, and I also played the piano from an early age, I loved classical music. So I wanted to do some classical music for kids. I grew up on Pete and the wolf (composition by Sergei Prokofiev – note Red.) on animals. I tried to write something similar that the children would enjoy.
How long did you compose the symphony?
It took me those 30 years. With some of those breaks. The second part of the project, its completion, took me about a year.
And how long have we been writing the book?
It was probably similar. I did some of it a lot, a long time ago, I finished the rest in a few months.
I know that you will read excerpts from it at a Prague concert. How long will you be on stage?
I think the whole concert lasts forty-five to fifty minutes, which is great for children. It’s long enough, but not too long. It will be nice, the hall is beautiful … I can’t wait!

The main theme of the symphony is the kingdom of animals. Is there also a section dedicated to your beloved Labrador?
Winston’s picture is in my book. In my author’s exercise.
Yes, it is, I noticed.
But there is no dog in the symphony.
So what kind of animals can listeners look forward to?
For kangaroos, wild boars, hippos, elephants, bats and other animals.
“I like to be very visual,” are your words. Was that also the reason why you decided to write a children’s book?
Yippee. Welcome, when I was growing up, we don’t have to watch TV at home. Her parents didn’t want her. I read children’s books so much, I also loved the picture books. For example, from Dr. Seusse (Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904–1991) was an American writer of books and poems for children and a cartoonist. Red.).
I read these children’s picture books and listened to my mother’s records of classical music. That’s why I also wanted to create a picture book, during which you can hear the music, and then everything will come together. I had a lot of fun with it.
I know you play the piano yourself.
How often?
Daily. I played five minutes ago before we started the conversation.
How long have we been playing?
Three minutes?
I was in a hurry, but I needed to clear my head a little.

Two of your books have also been filmed. Have you seen those movies?
How did you like it?
I had a great time. However, it is true that my books are really complicated. And a two-hour story was to emerge from each of them. I think Ron Howard (director of the Code of Master Leonard and Angels and Demons, 2006 and 2009 – note. Red.) and Tom Hanks did a fantastic job. I am honored to have been able to work with them …
Plus, there’s a TV series based on my other books, The Lost Symbol. I’m sure it will be available for you too … Working on it was fun too. I was given a lot more space to tell my stories.
I know about that series. How many episodes have you seen?
I read all ten. I’ve seen five so far. However, I also watched the filming daily. I watched what I was working on. So I have an idea of what the show looks like.
Do you like participating in filming like this?
You know, it’s interesting, it’s fun. I don’t know anything about filming, when I go to filming, I’m there as a tourist. Seriously. I’m just watching.
You said: I’m a tourist. How long will you stay in the Czech Republic?
Oh, just a week. And will you have with you a list of what you have to do with us, do you have time?
Yes I will. But I won’t tell you anything about it, because I would tell you what I could do and what I could research … But of course there are also tourist items on the list: look at Charles Bridge, the astronomical clock, look at other mysterious places. ..
Will you only stay in Prague, or will you go outside?
I will stay in Prague, but I still don’t know where I will live.
I know you’re a morning bird. You get up very early in the morning, specifically at four. What time do you go to bed?
I go to bed about six hours before I get up. I sleep like that for six hours. I lie down around ten in the evening, I get up at four.
Is that enough for you?
Yes, because I get up naturally. I don’t even order an alarm clock. Sometimes it occurs to me: you should sleep more because of eyes that don’t like it. We try to write daily. Although the last month has been very busy, I’ve had a lot of work on the symphony … Still trying to keep up with the rhythm of daily writing.
I am currently working on my next novel with Robert Langdon. I’m completely immersed in it. He is quite difficult to write because his plot is complicated. I don’t know how long it will take me to finish it, but it looks good.
We talk at a distance. I’m in Prague, you at home, in the United States. How hard is it to get to Europe now?
I don’t think it’s hard. As far as I know, the European Union does not welcome Americans very much now, but it is just a recommendation, not a legal matter. In addition, I have two doses of the infirmary and I also had a covid. I will be very, very careful. They are boldly called the safest person who (from the USA – note Red.) arrives. We will see. I hope they let me go to you.
But the Prague concert is not the first musical performance of the symphony, is it?
Yes, that’s the way it is. The symphony has already been played in a number of countries.
Also in Europe?
Sure, for example in Zagreb … But as I said, it was heard in a number of other countries. This will be the one with which it premieres in Croatia, the first time I will be on stage in Europe in person. I have a weakness for Prague. Prague is deep in my heart. It’s a beautiful hall (the concert is organized Czech National Symphony Orchestra – note Red.). I have a great publisher in Prague and I can’t wait for my “publishing family” and meeting my new “musical family”.
Do you still count how many books you have sold in the world? Is two hundred million worth?
Yes, somehow similar, rather more. I was very lucky. It’s really a lot.

Do you still play a musical instrument other than the piano?
I still play a bit of the guitar, but it’s not good … But mainly I play the piano and I also sing.
What music did you like or do you like best?
When I was growing up, I loved classical music: Tchaikovsky, Béla Bartók, Lew Pollack. Then they came (it’s about music groups – note Red.) Beach Boys and Eagles. Now I listen to something from everyone, even country. I mix classics with country …
Do you also like a Czech composer?
Tell me. I played so many different things, after all my mom was a music teacher, a professional. There were really a lot of composers she taught me.
What about Antonín Dvořák?
Dvořák? The New World Symphony has always been one of my favorite compositions.
And do you know anything from Czech? Hello thank you …
I’ll learn it all before I come. But maybe you could leave me. How do you say: Hello, please and thank you?
This is Hello.
Thank you thank you.
Thank you. Thank you … You see, Czech is really very difficult.
Do you speak Spanish better?
Definitely, I have lived in Spain for a long time. In addition, all Romance languages are similar in some way, and as I grew up on classical music, I heard Italian, French, and a little Spanish. And there was also German, which I know is not a Romance language. It is also closer to me than Slavic languages, because it is simply closer to my mother tongue. Otherwise, I also studied Russian. But the only thing I remember from it is: Cheers, how are you eating?
Why did you study Russian?
It was the first language I tried to protect as a foreign language at the age of thirteen or fourteen. At that time, I was offered Russian in the 9th grade, so I was learning Russian. I really tried …
What about Cyrillic? It is difficult not only to read but also to write.
Well, I didn’t even get that far. I left Russian and exchanged it for Italian and Spanish.
