Age of Agility
This remarkable exhibition reminds us that today we live in the age of absolute mobility: long distances are covered quickly and comfortably. All of this has long since become a matter of course due to the technical achievements of the last 200 years. The special exhibition throws a nostalgic but also critical look back into the history of locomotion, traffic and mobility in Tyrol.
No locomotion without muscles
In earlier times, it was your own muscle strength that counted. Those who wanted to transport heavy loads turned to animals for help. Donkeys and horses dragged luggage through the mountains on mule belts. A milestone for a more comfortable locomotion was the improvement of the roads. Until the 19th century, the carriage was the most important means of transport for travelers, some of whom described their experiences in reports. At the same time, the railway developed, rolling through Tyrol for the first time in 1858. This means that the country has become increasingly networked, which not only promotes economic exchange, but also intellectual and cultural exchange.
New challenges
In addition to a quick north-south connection through Tyrol, the focus is on the expansion of “tourism”, which would mainly be due to the growing number of guests dying to arrive by car. Today, men resist from place to place in the shortest possible time, which is now confronting us with new challenges. From street noise to air pollution to health complaints, the downside of mobility is also highlighted. Later innovations and more sustainable trend reversals such as hybrid drives, electromobility or car sharing are also discussed.
