Construction of nearly 3,000 homes to start in the first half of 2021
In the first half of 2021, 2,894 independent homes were built in Amsterdam. 975 of these homes are medium-priced rental homes and 518 are social rental homes.
There is a huge shortage of housing in our city. Amsterdam has committed to building an average of 7,500 homes per year from 2018 to 2025. Of these, an average of 1,670 homes are medium-priced rent and 2,500 homes are social rented by housing associations. The houses are built by market parties, corporations, self-builders and housing cooperatives.
Figures first half 2021
In the first half of 2021, a total of 2,894 independent homes were built. A new house counts in the figures from the moment that the first piles of the house are literally driven into the ground. We call that the ‘figures start construction’.
Build ‘medium-term’ in the first half of 2021
More than a third (975 homes) of these 2,894 new homes are mid-priced rental properties. So halfway through the year we were well over half of the total number of 1,670 medium-price homes that we want to build on average per year.
Build ‘social rent’ in the first half of 2021
Between January and the end of June 2021, the first piles of 518 independent social rental homes were driven into the ground. The housing associations still have plans for more than 1,500 homes for the second half of the year.
Plans second half 2021
For the second half of 2021, there are still plans for the construction of about 10,000 homes. This is also known as the plan stock. The municipality, the housing associations and the market parties are doing everything they can to start construction projects from this stock. It is not yet certain which projects will start this year. At the moment it is difficult to find contractors and there are not always enough construction workers and building materials immediately available. We also have to take into account that sometimes projects can only start later.
