With its contribution to a regional partner, the brewery makes it possible for the benefit of all modern cancer research in Linz.
Linz (OTS) – As Austria’s largest brewery company, Brau Union Österreich is aware of its ecological and social responsibility and strives to create a sustainable future for Austria.
“The health of Austrians is also part of the well-being of everyone, now more than ever. That is why Brau Union Österreich supports a regional partner, the Linz Kepler University Clinic, in its cancer research ”, says Klaus Schörghofer, Chairman of the Board of Brau Union Österreich.
Optimizations for lung cancer therapy
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Europe; more than 4,000 people die from it in Austria every year. In recent years, many advances have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, particularly with regard to so-called “immunotherapy” and other targeted therapies, which makes it possible to achieve an increasingly individualized and optimized therapeutic approach. Nevertheless, the mortality from cancer is very high and that is also problematic.
“Further research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer is also essential. We want to make a contribution to this at the Kepler University Hospital with our research approach on the so-called ‘Id proteins’ ”, explains Primary Dr. Bernd Lamprecht.
These proteins not only control the cell cycle and cell differentiation during development, but also play a role in the development, progression, metastasis and drug resistance of cancer. Id proteins come out strong in cancer cells compared to healthy cells. This makes the development of drugs that attack the Id proteins very promising.
“The hypothesis of this study is that the expression pattern of Id proteins in the blood and tissue of lung cancer patients correlates with the aggressiveness of the disease and the success of certain treatments. Our goal is to be able to optimize lung cancer therapy in the future with the help of the Id expression pattern, ”says project manager Dr. Cornelia Roschger.
“The duration of the study is planned for two years. The financial support of the Brau Union Österreich is very valuable and our work ”, is senior physician Dr. David Lang grateful.
