AntwerpLovers of the Iberian food culture can now have lunch or dinner at Casa Conservas on the Antwerp Pig Market. The new wine, sherry and tapas bar and delicatessen want to make Antwerp residents enthusiastic about canned fish. “Delicatessen such as tuna, mackerel, sardines, anchovies and canned mussels provide real flavor bombs for the typical, Iberian savory,” it sounds.
As big fans of the ‘canned’ culture, Carla Pantens and Wim Schuer opened their Casa Conservas, with a tapas menu based on many typical delicacies. They are inspired by the tapas bar Maria Do Mar in Portimão (Algarve) and work with the preserved fish from four traditional Spanish and Portuguese projects.
“Casa Conservas is a recognizable tapas bar where you order a snack with a glass of sherry or white wine for the ‘p’tit creux’ and finally start with a satisfied and blissful feeling after a whole series of tapas,” says Carla. “The menu anticipates with numerous snacks such as bread with coulis of size and garlic, tuna, mackerel or sardines. There are also various sandwiches, salads and a combined tasting plate or a tasting menu. That menu includes an extensive two-and-a-half hour tasting of the Casa Conservas repertoire including jamón, bifana (finely marinated and fried pork fillet) and a typical dessert warm pastéis de nata or torta Santiago.”

In addition to a large selection of sherry wines, you can choose from a dozen Spanish and Portuguese wines, which are also formed by the glass. For beer lovers, there are two Spanish (San Miguel and Estrella Galicia) and one Portuguese lager (Sagres).
As host, Raul Pena brings the Spanish vibes even more to Antwerp. He was previously the matre of café-restaurant Galicia on the horse market. That Spanish family restaurant recently closed after 38 years because his parents retired.
Casa Conservas is open from Thursday to Sunday from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm for lunch, dinner and take-away.
