In Belarus, Russian woman sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for tweeting about Lukashenka
The Moscow District Court of Brest sentenced Russian woman Irina Vikkholm to 1.5 years in prison under the article on libel against Alexander Lukashenko. About it informs TV channel “Belsat”.
She was found guilty of slandering the president (part 2 of article 367 of the Criminal Code of Belarus).
The reason for the criminal case was Vikholm’s tweet about the Ryanair boarding in Minsk, which she published on May 23, 2021. The tweet contained photos and text: “Another crime of Lukashenka. Aviation piracy act “.
Five days later, the woman was detained. As reported by Mediazona.Belarus, Vikholm was first invited to the Citizenship and Displacement Department, after which he was sent to an isolation ward in Brest, and then to a pre-trial detention center. The arrest of the Russian woman became known only in September.
At the trial, the Russian woman claims a challenge to the judge and the state prosecutor, which the court did not satisfy. She also turned down a lawyer assigned to her.
On May 23, a Ryanair plane urgently landed at the Minsk airport due to a bomb report that turned out to be false. On board were the former editor-in-chief of the opposition telegram channel NEXTA Roman Protasevich and his girlfriend, Russian woman Sofya Sapega. They were detained after the plane had landed.
