How they interpret the new challenges of Turkey in Athens
Turkey provokes again and Athens keeps its composure: In Maximou they believe that the new … tsalimi of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are due to the irritation of Ankara, which wants to be repeated in the foreground of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum.
On the one hand, Erdogan re-chooses the tactics of challenges, on the other hand, at the same time, to appear on the international stage as an advocate of dialogue with Greece. In fact, yesterday he spoke about a meeting in New York with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on the sidelines of the UN Summit.
However, the appointment has not been closed, nor has it been requested, nor, moreover, as pointed out by Maximou, Mitsotakis and Erdogan have finished a different program in the USA and will practically not coincide in New York.
The Greek government considers that Ankara is trying to be left in the lurch of tension in Athens and to be allowed to close fronts by continuing to try to reach Egypt, extraditing to Cairo 24 Egyptian opposition members of the “Muslim Brotherhood”.
Protest action from Athens
So after a calm summer, Ankara returned to the tactics of challenges to test the Greek borders, as it did e.g. with the harassment of the French research ship Nautical Geo that will conduct research in the east of Crete to map the possible course of the East Med pipeline.
Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias instructed the Greek Embassy in Ankara to carry out a fierce protest against the Turkish harassment of the research ship Nautical Geo, as well as the issuance of an irregular Navtex.
And today, he ordered the Greek Embassy in Ankara to hold a protest action for illegal fishing by Turkish fishing boats in our territorial waters.
He also stressed the condemnable practice of Turkish Coast Guard vessels, which accompanies Turkish fishing vessels and harasses Greek fishing vessels.
“Illegal fishing in Greek territorial waters is also a parable of European law, in addition to the fact that it is another parable, on the part of Turkey, of the International Law of the Sea.
Turkey, unfortunately, continues its delinquent behavior.
“The Greek side, committed to defending its rights that are rejected by international law, does not leave any challenge unanswered”, the Foreign Minister emphasizes.
However, Erdogan’s reaction to the EU MED was also indicative of Turkey’s irritability.
The nine leaders of the EU southern countries called on all countries in the region to jointly declare that they respect the sovereignty and sovereign rights of the EU member states. and stressed that the demarcation of maritime zones must be done by peaceful means and in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), of course photographing Turkey.
Erdogan reacted by making unwanted statements and bias from the countries that signed the declaration.
For its part, the Greek government continues its diplomatic initiatives. The Prime Minister after his visit to New York on September 22 will be in Paris on the 27th.
Mr. Dendia will also be in New York for the High Level Week of the 76th UN General Assembly. A tripartite meeting will be held on September 23 with the Foreign Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus and Egypt, and on the 24th of the month a quadripartite meeting will be held with the Foreign Ministers of Israel and Cyprus, as well as US Undersecretary of State Victoria Nulan.
