Belarus took 62nd place in the world innovation rating – REFORM.by

World Intellectual Property Organization published world innovation rating. This year Belarus took 62nd place in it. It has moved up two positions compared to last year, when it was 64th. Last year, our country took 72nd place. Her highest result is 53rd in 2015.

The assessment of the country’s innovative development consists of two sub-ratings: available resources and conditions for innovation and the achieved practical results. In terms of resources, our country is in 67th position, which is 1 place lower than last year, and according to the results – 62nd. Belarus climbed one place.

The rating is made up of several indicators: institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, domestic market development, business development.

Our country has the best position in terms of the quality of human capital and research. In GII-2021 Belarus was ranked 38th (-1). In this sub-rating, postgraduate education is high (7th place), in terms of R&D, our country is only 64th.

In GII-2021, Belarus’ assessment of business development is poor. Our country dropped from 67th to 69th place. At the same time, Belarus regained leadership in the share of employed women with higher education.

Some regression in the infrastructure of innovation. The country dropped from 58th to 59th place. ICT development was rated 44th (-10), general infrastructure – 74th (+12), environmental sustainability – 77th (-8).

In the new rating, Belarus also changed one position in assessing the development of institutions. We are in 85th place. The political environment was rated at 89th position (10), the regulatory environment – at 103rd (+3), and the business environment – at 58th position (0).

Belarus slightly improved its position in the field of market development. Our country has risen from 107th to 101st place. Lending was rated 118th (-1), investments – 112th (-15), and market competition and market size – 45th (+15).

The results of innovative activity in the ranking are made up of the development of technology and the knowledge economy, as well as the results of creative activity. In terms of economy and technology development, Belarus improved the indicator by 9 positions to 37th place. Knowledge creation was rated at 61st place -3, in terms of the influence of knowledge we climbed to 16th place (+13), and in terms of knowledge penetration we are in 34th place (+7).

Belarus climbed four places in terms of the results of creative activity. Our country is 93rd. This indicator evaluates intangible assets (19th place), creative products and services (100th place), as well as creative activity on the Internet (26th place).

The indicators of Belarus remain worse than those of all its neighbors: Latvia is in 38th place, Lithuania – in 39th, Poland – in 40th, Russia – in 45th, Ukraine – in 49th. At the same time, all neighboring countries lost their positions by 1-2 places.
The world top innovation globute Switzerland, Sweden, USA, Great Britain, Korea, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, Denmark and Germany, at the bottom of the ranking are Angola, Yemen and Guinea.
