Athens: Mitsotaki-Erdogan meeting in New York is not set up through a statement
Possible meeting of Kyriakos Mitsotakis with Tayyip Erdogan in New York is not set up through a statement government sources make it clear that so far there is nothing tangible diplomatically.
As government sources told SKAI, such a meeting could not be prepared through a statement at Istanbul airport as the Turkish president did.
“There is a specific procedure and the telephone number of the diplomatic contract of the Prime Minister Eleni Sourani has not been ringed by the representative of the Turkish President Ibrahim Kalin, there has been no request,” they clarified.
“If the phone rings, Greece is open to this discussion, Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself has stated that there must be communication between Greece and Turkey at a higher level so that tension exists to be ruled out there.
It remains to be seen whether there will be this request from the Turkish president, which is a prerequisite for the program to remain as well as for the two leaders to agree for an hour when the plane lands and the other prepares to take off is not enough time for such meeting.
Regarding the unity of the Prime Minister at the United Nations this week, it is expected to refer to the need for stability in the region, in the context and the role that the EU is looking for after the latest developments of the AUKUS agreement.
It remains to be seen whether this provocation and Erdogan’s statements for a meeting are a result of the pressure in Turkey, especially after the results of the EU MED 9 summit in Athens where the messages in Ankara were very strict and very clear.
Anyway in Ankara insist that the Mitsotaki-Erdogan meeting will take place. Information from Washington, cited by Manolis Kostidis, clarifies that they are waiting for preparations and do not specify details, as the appointment has not been closed.
It is noted that on Wednesday 6 o’clock (local) Tayyip Erdogan leaves New York. No diplomatic contacts have been made so far, but there is time to close the meeting and allow the Turkish president to remain.
