Masters of Gardens: Mediterranean-style garden on the outskirts of Prague
Lovers of southern Europe want to build their piece of the Mediterranean in their own garden first. Unfortunately, we have to make it impossible without professional help. After many attempts at different plantings, they came to the conclusion that the garden did not match their needs.
“Of course, it is not possible to build a Mediterranean garden in the Czech Republic, because here we have completely different climatic conditions than other southern European plants need. They simply will not survive the winter. However, we tried to tune the garden and the plants in it in the desired direction and to evoke the impression of a garden in the seaside area as much as possible, “says Dana Makrlíková.
Unfortunately, most of the land is oriented to the north, so most plants that require a lot of sun and heat would soon die. But in a place where the sun shines all day, we managed to create a pleasant sitting area with palm trees, yuccas, etc. Elevated flower beds for vegetables were also created here.
In order to achieve a more Mediterranean look, Dana chose a threshing surface for the seating area, which is a compacted aggregate that passes into the flower beds with gas and thus looks a bit like sand on a beach by the sea.
In addition, plants stand out more in light aggregates. The palm trees (Trachycarpus) will be covered by the owners for the winter with a special heated greenhouse.
