After the first day of the Davis Cup match Argentina – Belarus draw

September 19, Minsk / Corr. BELTA /. After the first day of the Davis Cup match, which takes place on the open clay courts of Belnos Aires, the score is equal – 1: 1 between the tennis players of Argentina and Belarus, BelTA has learned.

In the first match on Saturday, Belarusian Daniil Ostapenkov, who did not yet have points in the ATP rating, managed to sensationally defeat the 15th racket of the planet Diego Schwarzman in two games – 6: 4, 6: 3. The meeting lasted 1 hour and 36 minutes.

In the second singles match, Argentinean Guido Pella (82nd number of the world rating) beat in a two-party Belarusian tennis player Eric Harutyunyan (unrated) – 6: 1, 6: 2. The game lasted 1 hour and 12 minutes.

Today in a doubles match Belarusians Alexander Zgirovsky and Martin Borisyuk will face Argentine duo Horacio Ceballos / Maximo Gonzalez. Then Erik Harutyunyan will play with Diego Schwartzman, and then Guido Pella will be Daniil Ostapenkov’s rival.

Earlier, the teams of Belarus and Argentina met twice in the Davis Cup match: in 2001 in Cordoba the South Americans won 5: 0, and in 2004 in the quarterfinals the Belarusians took revenge with the same dry score. The then reaching the semifinals was the best result of the Belarusian tennis players in the entire history of performances.

The national team of Belarus made its debut in the Davis Cup in 1994. Since then, the team has played 64 matches, winning 36 of them. Maxim Mirny and Vladimir Volchkov won 24 singles matches, and they won 19 games in pairs. Argentina has been playing in these competitions for almost a century – since 1923, it won the championship title in 2016.

In the last draw, held in 2019, the Spanish national team became the triumphant for the sixth time in history, having won the decisive match of the Canadian tennis players. Most of the Davis Champions were won by the representatives of the United States, who have 32 titles, the Australians became the first 28, the teams of Great Britain and France were 10 champions each.
