Hebrew News – Yom Kippur in the United States: 400 Years of History
Great Joachim and Elijah Lagardo to Sandy Copax and Gabe Karimi – Doing Yom Kippur in the United States
The first Jews arrived in the New World more than four years ago, and there have been organized killings here since before the establishment of the United States. The rest of the embryos moved the center of gravity of Jewish life in North America from Charleston, South Carolina to New York, and most of the other people of the Moses religion moved numbers to Ashkenazis, but Yom Kippur was always special
Strange Yom Kippur in America, eh? There is no such special feeling. The world does not shut up, the street does not empty, and even those in Israel prepare for the holy day with food (as if who will hear, a week now will not be) and series to do it bing, especially in the East and bitter East should go to the nearest synagogue, no matter what community , And connect a little to the sources.

You’re not alone. Jews understand what today is the United States of America for nearly 450 years, and even if it took some time for us to exaggerate orderly communities and establish synagogues, Yom Kippur was celebrated in the great land long before the United States was established. For example, a woman who “discovered” Texas, that is, the first Europe to tread on its land, was a Spanish citizen named Luis de Carvajal e Cueva, a member of a Martian family, and so did in 1570 their quorum.
14 years later, the well-known researcher and adventurer Sir Walter Rally shocks Joachim, a Jew from Prague and a mining expert, to join the Scouts who are trying to establish a first permanent colony in the “Virginia area” in the north of the New World. The company could participate in the founding of the Roanoke colony, by that name off the coast of Virginia. However the colony failed to survive and all its inhabitants, including information, spent weeks in England.
I can also get Elijah Lagardo (Elias Lagardo), a French Jew hired by the James City Colony in Virginia to teach the farmers instead of growing grapes for wine. Lagardo remains in the New World, appearing in the records for another 40 years, and begins a chain of Jewish presence in Elizabeth City County, Virginia, which emerged in additional historical documents in the 17th century. Jews work, buy land, sell land … live, well – quietly and without anyone harassing them.

North of this, Solomon Franco, a Jewish merchant, arrives at the Port of Boston in 1649. He wants to settle in the place but the Puritans who run the city and the whole of New England area specialize in their “pure” community of Jews, and pay Franco to return in good faith to the Netherlands. Five years ago, in the middle of the month of Slichot Tanah (1654), 23 Sephardic Jews came from the Netherlands, through the Dutch colony of Recife in Brazil, the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam at the mouth of the Hudson River.
The governor of New Amsterdam, Peter Stavesent, my thought can settle down instead of sending fanaticism to his church, from the stream of Dutch reform. But the mother kingdom already has a strong tradition of religious tolerance. The authorities in the original Amsterdam reverse the intolerant thought of the colony governor, and the first seed of the New York Holy Congregation (as the colony was renamed after the English conquered it from the Dutch, not long after) was buried in the land between the East River and Hudson.
A year later Israeli holidays are modestly celebrated in the home of one of the community members, an area the U.S. community will continue for a number of special Sabbaths and animals for a hundred years – in homes, or once in a rented or temporary structure. This synagogue, built in 1759, still stands, the oldest synagogue in North America.

This control was greatest over what we did to the United States, and in South Carolina, in and around Charleston. Less than two hundred years after the Spanish expulsion, and although the Inquisition includes control over where they are, they still live in the shadow of trauma , And in short – do not exactly elevate their Judaism to a miracle in public.
It so happens that the first official and organized Jewish community in North America is registered in New York – the She’erit Yisrael community, which was founded in 1687 and built its first synagogue in 1728. It is the first permanent public building in North America to rise and rise in a heartbeat prayer every year vows, on the eve of Tishrei. The current community building, also known as the “Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue,” was built in 1897, still stands at 2 70th Street in Manhattan, and included purchases of buildings and Judaica rulings from the First Synagogue.

In 1740 the “Holy House of God” Congregation was founded in Charleston, and in 1820 the congregation numbered 2,000 people — far more than anywhere else in the United States. George Westton wept bitterly and was on the verge of starvation.
Haim Salomon, the lord of the congregation, stopped the other prayers and dared to void the holiday to write a check for many thousands of dollars (then worth a huge fortune) to starve the army that two years later would overthrow the city of Yorktown and end the war for the brazen rebels in the empire . As mentioned, a myth – but one with solid historical legs. Haim Salomon was indeed the “financier of the revolution” and donated more than half a million dollars to the money of that time – almost ten billion rooms. He died in 1785, penniless, as the Immigrant Nation did not repay him.
Beginning in about 1830, the demographic balance within the Jewish community in my new nation changed. Waves of migration from German-speaking countries are turning many Ashkenazis, and when the great border arrives from Poland and Russia in the late 19th century, Spanish Jewry in general is produced for a small minority of the New World Moses in general and in the United States. The latter, with the arrival of large numbers of Israelis from the East and also immigrants from France (originally from the Maghreb Jews) and South America.
But the Spanish community continues to be very dominant in the southern coastal states, and among other prominent figures grows Judah (Judah) Philip Benjamin, a lawyer, owner of orchards and slaves, a legislator in the state of Louisiana, a member of the US Santa on her behalf and also the Jewish minister The first in a new world – the Foreign Minister of the Confederacy, who worked unsuccessfully to derive from the slopes of international recognition. His ancestors and making any gesture recognize the fact that it is not another day.

In 1893 we were the units for special influences at the “World Fair” held in Chicago the Turkish “Bazaar” which also included a replica of a mosque. However, there were also quite a few Jews among the operators of the Turkish “pavilion,” and Yom Kippur passed the days of the fair. Then the Turkish mosque was converted into a synagogue, and the merchant Robert Levy, the director of the “Peer Avi Mozes” bazaar, and the other Jews there celebrated Yom Kippur properly, with a song called “Kol Nidrei” that went on the fair island.
In 1965, all of America received a small taste of the deep continuation of Yom Kippur for the Jews. I am truly the “National Time Recreation,” the key to America’s soul and the most popular beach-to-coast, unrivaled sport. It was the No. 1 game in the final series, the World Series, between the champion of sexual history, the Minusta Twins, and the national league champion, the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers’ big star was 30-year-old pest Sandy Copax, who was born Sanford Brown and was given the last name he sells after his stepfather.
In his first six seasons in the league, Copax was a mediocre pitcher, losing more games than he won. But after learning specifically not to throw as hard as he could get, he received his submissions the rotary motion that made him the deadliest thing the league knew in the 1960s. From 1961 to 1965, Copax led the two leagues together each year in a minority of laps that inspired rival batsmen, winning more than a hundred games and losing less than 40. Three and a half weeks before the first game, Operation Setup joined the Jewish phenomenon on the most exclusive goal list in baseball – in fact, they recorded a perfect game in which no opposing batsman even reached the first base.
Then I got to October 6, 1965, and America was amazed to find that there was something more important than the national game. “I’m not playing on Yom Kippur. This is not a new thing,” Mr. Copax calmly announced. The Dodgers’ personality key player colleague, Madon Driesdale, was pulled out after a rest too short and lost the opening game of the series. The establishment of the State of Israel against all odds was more important, and the crushing victory of two years in the Six Day War will add more pride to American Jews, but my car Sandy Copax – the most American there is, but this – first and foremost a Jew.
“Is there anything more important than baseball ?? Enough, come on.” Sandy Copax (Photo: Los Angeles Times)
A closer look will show that the story is not that simple. There had been cases before that what our Copax could not have experienced for myself, but about what I was excited about a few minutes from the moment the sun went down and the fast ended – which means he arrived at the stadium and held a warm-up while celebrating the holiday. But these cases were in the 1950s, when it was not yet worthwhile in the world of development and the object of meticulous public attention. When he became one, he faced a “great power to find great responsibility” and took action, raising the profile of Jews and Judaism from the lavish streets of New Orleans to the “Badlands” of North Dakota.
A similar case occurred in our generation as well. Gabe (Gabriel, for you) Carimi was one of the most talented attacking line players of his generation. First as a player at the University of Wisconsin in 2007. The opening game of the college season fell on a Saturday that also happened on Yom Kippur, the man did not give up, fasting every 25 hours of the holiday – which fortunately ended a little over an hour before the opening whistle.
Four years later, in “Combine” weeks, the candidates for the “recruitment” of the Mexican league are used for the draft, Karimi was asked by the team representatives if he would refuse to play on Yom Kippur if the deadline falls on a game day. “I checked 15 ahead,” Karimi replied seriously, “and it doesn’t fall on a Sunday.” Sunday is of course the day when most NFL games are held, but also a day where the Hebrew calendar is intentionally arranged so that Yom Kippur will never fall on it – because if Yom Kippur on Sunday then one has to cook a break meal on Saturday, and especially a problem.
“It’s okay, God forbid there will be a Yom Kippur on a football day” Gabe Karimi (Photo: USA Today)
But there are Monday games at night, and at the end of the season there are two weeks in which there are games on Saturday, and the luck of Karimi, who retired in 2014, did not fall to teams where he played such a game on Yom Kippur. Because if that had happened, there is no doubt at all that I would have had to do it without the “Jewish hammer”, who loved the game very much, but it is this direction that he loves more.
In short, the history of the Jewish community, the members of what constitutes the United States today are just as long as the days of European settlement here in general, and the history of a Jewish community is necessarily the history of the Jewish holidays, with Yom Kippur at the forefront. Copax, or just pop into the synagogue to give an opinion on the cantor and thus be helped on a day of freedom – know a few parts in a long chain, which is an integral part of the mosaic of this vast and amazing land.
